freemans catalogue charging me late payment fee of £20

apparantly freemans have sent me 5 letters stating that i owe £15. the first one that i received was today, stating that they are charging me a late payment fee of £20 because im late paying £15 so now i owe £35 in total.

can they do this???? i said to them that i hadnt received any letters and that ive been a customer with them for nearly 20 years but they will not budge, i shop with catalogues all the time and this has never happened before.

At the moment I think they can charge what they like subject to any t+cs. Although there is a lot of press on charges like this at the moment and I think there is some committee looking at it or something.

I would pay it under protest and write to their HQ to complain if you can't get them to back down on the phone. Ask them to prove they sent you letters, confirm the address etc.

I would assume if you have been a customer for 20 years they are going to let you off some £35 fee, especially if you never got the letters anyway.

BTW do you actually owe them anything that's overdue??

If they don't back down, you could try talking to CAB about the charges and they can advice you on the official body to complain to about the charges.

If they don't back down I wouldn't want to shop with them in future and I would tell everyone I knew not to, and tell them this too!

    Good luck.
