Cooker/stove - Electric or Gas?

We're going to be buying a cooker soon - probably an inexpensive freestanding one. We love the 30's gas cooker we have in our present flat but it can't come with us (we'd take it if we could).
People always said in the past that gas is the best for cooking on, and it's cheaper than electricity. But is gas still cheaper to cook on, what with the recent rises in prices?
Which is more efficient, and cost-effective, and environmentally friendly?
Thanks!
