LED lighting for under kitchen cabinets

I was wandering around Wickes the other day looking at under cabinet lighting and particularly liked the LED strip lighting, but not at £85 per 30cm eek. I think this type of lighting looks very neat.

I've been looking online to try and get a cheaper price, but it appears there are two different types: led strip lighting or led flexible strip lighting. And then there are ones with different number of diodes in - all very confusing.

Can anyone please advise as to what type I would need, and if you've seen places which sell at reasonable prices even better.......

I'm wanting the lighting for under corner cupboards, which is 120cm long one way and 90cm the other way. I presume it would better better if the lighting ran continously along each length aswell. Any help much appreciated thanks.

The starting point is to decide of what sort of light do you want. Would it be white, a single colour or changeable colour?

The cost of this lighting seems excessive for the length of run that you get.

One way to reduce the cost or get more for your money is to look at the 12v lighting that is used for custom cars.

I used a company called www.litewave.co.uk and get 8 metres of variable colour flexible strip that can be set to any colour but is was about £350. However you can get smaller, less fancy strips on ebay. You just run then from the 12v transformer.

  • You can get really good results with tube lights - you know, the flexible tube with lots of tiny lamps inside. There are two sorts: normal/neon, which is a bit cheaper, and LED. The LED cost a few pounds more to buy, but practically nothing to run.

Both types are frequently offered on ebay and amazon.

LED systems vary in the type of power supply needed to run them. When they say "plug & play", you can just plug them into a socket and they'll light up.

Some need a transformer to "drive" them, the advantage of this is you can wire them into your lighting circuit - and can run several LED installations off the one driver. So that's the better option for more sophisticated effects.

I love tube lights! They give a really nice gentle but efficient light, you can bend them round corners and they're cheap :D

If I need to learn about lighting, I always look on mr-resistor.co.uk . For the tube lights themselves - Mr. Resistor's aren't too expensive, but you can buy them cheaper especially if you need a long run.
