Urgent Advice Needed! - Getting a mortgage after a divorce

I really need to ask your advice on behalf of my partner.
Current situation:
Partner is in final stages of divorce, so finances are being sorted. It looks like the ex is going to get 100% of the equity in the former marital home. They took out a joint mortgage on the property and it looks like she will only need to use her 'best endeavours' to get him off the mortgage. This means pretty much that she won't really bother (long and torrid story - won't bore you!). She has to take over the full payments of the mortgage, but he will still be jointly liable if she defaults. My partner should have about £40k to put down as a deposit on a property of his own.
My questions are:
Will it be possible for him to get a mortgage in his sole name even though he still named on the joint mortgage?
Are there companies who specialise in these products? Will he have to pay a higher rate?
If he has a mortgage on his own and she defaults on the joint mortgage how will this effect his credit rating and can he recover from this?
Any advice on how to move forward would be really gratefully received. Things look pretty bleak at the moment and I'd love to be able to give him a ray of hope
Thanks guys
