Underfunding fee made me overdrawn

Hopefully this is the right place for some urgent advice. My wife and I have A&L premier accounts, we can no longer place £500 a month into them so in July I sent letters by recorded delivery asking them to close the accounts. However they have not responded and have placed underfunding fees of £5 on both accounts which has made them overdrawn (account balances were nil) my wifes account did not have an overdraft so is now on £80 charges (an rising I presume) and a smaller amount of charges on my account which had an overdraft facility. I've spoken to them and been told accounts cannot be closed if overdrawn (they weren't when I sent letters to them). Where do I stand, what should I do. Should I reluctantly pay the charges and try to claim back or does the fact I sent them letters by recorded delivery put me in the right.

Here's hoping for help

Did you receive any responses at all?
Did you send the letter to the branch?

  • Thanks. The first correspondence we received was beginning of september to my wife saying she had gone overdrawn. The accounts were set up on the internet and the letters were sent to the Customer Service Centre. We went on holiday after letters were sent, so had hoped it would be dealt with whilst away.

In that case ask them where these letters went and why did the account not get closed as per your instruction IN WRITING.
