Driving Licence - Advice needed please

After 7 months of torture selling our house (that's another story!) we finally exchanged contracts yesterday and complete on Tuesday next (22nd Sept) - we fly to Spain on 1st October (bad timing I know but
unavoidable )and are hiring a car there.

On checking the DVLA web site it states that they hope to have a
turn around on changing addresses on driving licences of 10 days but
of course there is no guarantee, this is cutting it fine with our travel dates.

Can anyone advise as to what period of time is allowed for changing addresses and would we be able to leave it until we returned in mid October ?

Thanks for any help.

I moved house two years ago and still haven't got round to changing the address on my driving licence (this post has just reminded me that I must get it done). I certainly wouldn't advise leaving it as long as I have, but I really wouldn't worry at all about leaving it a few weeks until you get back off holiday.

Hi Senora, congratulations on selling the house - I'm sure the holiday is well deserved! I wouldn't advise leaving it for 2 years - as far as my memory cells can recall it's an offence punishable by a fine not to. I know you can change the details online if you don't need to change your photo - I'm not sure if you have to send your old license in or not if you do it this way.

No, I wouldn't advise it either - it is punishable by fine (£1,000 IIRC). But I really think a few weeks won't matter. You can do it online - I went on to do mine ages ago but gave up as the process was so long and you needed various documents which I didn't have to hand (passport number required I think). But I have now made it my mission to sort it out this weekend!

Just change address when you get back from your hols.

As you need your licence to hire the car I wouldn't be gambling with the DVLA's efficiency (or lack of) ;)

The DVLA turned my licence round (changing from paper to photocard) in a few days-I sent it off on a Friday and got it back the following Wednesday! This was at the end of June

This is exactly what I was thinking. The law requires you advise the DVLA "forthwith" so how about you fill in the new address on the counterpart of your licence, sign it, date it with the completion date, then just take it with you to spain.

Of course, you must send it to DVLA the moment you return from hols, but in the unlikely event that questions are asked before then, at least you've made the statutory declaration... just not quite got around to posting it amongst the house move confusion ;)
