Most people are fine with paying a token cost for a plastic bag, I really haven't encountered that many objections. I work in a second hand book shop and customers increasingly bring their own bags now, or they're happy to have a previously used bag.

I think the worst objection I encountered however was in M&S. I don't know what these people are thinking, but really it isn't hard to bring a reusable bag with you. Also, if you can afford to shop in M&S then it's rather unconvincing to get upset over paying 5p for a bag. Considering that customers at the discount stores like Lidl and Aldi have been paying for bags for years without complaining, you'd think customers at expensive stores would be able to cope with it too.

As I remember M&S gave us plenty of warming that the bags wouldn't be free after a certain day, and for about a week you could get a reusable bag completely free with your shopping, and when it wears out they'll replace it for nothing. I don't have any sympathy for the complainers, they're a select few who are being difficult for the sake of it.

I'm currently looking for a few jute/hessian bags to put 'green' christmas presents in :D

I know Tesco do one - got one myself, the one with ladybirds and huge advertising on.. and Asda do one which is a bit too small for what i need. Anyone seen any of the tesco-size ones anywhere else?

Annoyingly i saw two people today carrying perfect ones - one had the 'fairtrade' logo on and the other had a dictionary-type discription of recylcling, should have asked i know  I don't really want to buy online as the prices are a bit too high (£3.50 upwards + p&p )

    Can anyone help? x

These look pretty good and not so expensive

I let my mind wander and it never came back!

I spent money on myself a couple of months ago! I bought something which I thought was a bit frivolous and certainly cost more than I should have paid for a non-essential, but I don't care because I like it and I've used it soooooo much and it makes me feel good not using plastic bags!

I love my Trolley Dolly! Now I've always got reusable bags cos it lives in the car and I never lose money-off coupons because I've got a place to keep them!

Oh, I love it! I want one! Curse you for showing me - I'd never have seen it otherwise. Now I need one.
  • I think buying your own bag is worth it so your not being employed as a billboard.

Then don't wash the bin, let it get dirty. It's a bin. I've never understood the whole bin-washing phenomenon. What do people use their bins for apart from putting rubbish in? Who sees it apart from the bin-men when they empty it (and when it's full of rubbish anyway).

I was talking about the pedal bin in kitchen.

I have a lovely 'plastic' bag that I got from Firebox - I only got it because I had a free £5 voucher courtesy of the freebies board. The bag is fab although only a shoulder bag, I shall use it for my shopping.

The bag is really colourful and has basically been made from rubbish - old fruit juice cartons to be precise.

    Oh, er. Fair enough.

I went off on one there a bit didn't I? Sorry about that. I do that sometimes.

I feel a bit silly now.

    "I tell them that it's ok, I don't need a bag - I can just carry it.
'No it's alright, I'll put it in a bag for you'.
'It's fine, I can just carry it' (Really, it's ONE loaf of bread)
'I'll pop it in a bag for you anyway."

"In Primark, I (as always) said, can I just put these items into my bag? I was told quite abruptly that i HAD to take thier bags."

I think you are being too polite!! I always say "I don't want a bag, thank you." and have never been told that I must. If necessary to avoid a fuss accept the item bagged up, remove it and hand the bag back.

I always try to do my bit.

Thanks to consumer direct, who were handing out free cotton bags in my local department store, I now have a useful reusable bag which folds up nicely to go in my handbag :D

I'm glad supermarkets have now taken to putting fewer bags out. Though I always feel bad when I forget my carrier bags if I'm shopping and have to ask. :o
    Looking forward to the future.
