Say NO to plastic bags

I know it's not completely green, but I do save any plastic bags & collect up the neighbours as well & take them to the local market traders who are always pleased to reuse them. Saves the landfill for another day & helps reduce their overheads so we still have choices other than the supermarkets by helping keep the local traders in business. Not to mention lovely fresh local veg, way cheaper than supermarkets0

It's not just the plastic carrier bags, it's all the fiddley fruit and veg bags, and plastic cartons for your necterines, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, blah blah blah. I'm amazed at how full my bin is after a weekly shop!
I now insist on placing small quantities of loose items on the conveyor belt and when the checkout staff ask me if I want a bag, well, you can probably imagine the reply, especially when you end up paying for the weight of the bag in the first place!
Why is it only mushrooms are sold in paper bags, surely the Yanks have the right idea in using paper bags for groceries!
I used to work in tescos and this is why
1. mushrooms sweat and go manky in plastic bags, hence they are provided with paper ones
2. everything else in polybags for speed ie if its a paper bag, the checkout assistant has to open each bag and check whats in it whereas with a poly bag they dont.
theres the logic
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
kingbing wrote:I use an "onya bag", which I found on a stall at Greenwich market. They are designed as a replacement for plastic bags and fold up incredibly small into a little pouch. They are very light and strong too as they are made of parachute material.
The leaflet that comes with it says their website is https://www.onyabags.co.uk
Kingbing - I was just wondering how much the onya bags cost?0 -
Apparently shopping trolleys are the cool thing to have nowadays. I saw this site: https://www.rolser.co.uk. they do some shopping bags as well0

You can tell I'm a 'Newbie MoneySaver, can't you? I wanted to comment on the quote from Contains Mild Peril (good name, BTW) and managed to post it comment-less.
I was going to say I think Morrisons checkout persons have been told to start packing your bags to keep the queue moving. (Perhaps an MCP can confirm that - they must miss the little rest they used to get!) Makes sense, really - especially if you're in the queue watching someone else pack all their shopping in the manner they find most aesthetically pleasing.
Regarding too many carrier bags, I just take them back and use them again. It may get me some odd looks, but I wouldn't know - I'm too busy packing my shopping before the checkout person starts doing it for me!0 -
We use fold up crates for ur main shop, I have atrolley for the market and love paper bags ...hate carriers and would just love these shops like aldi to sell the linen bags they sell in their shops in Germany for about 50 cents...If given the option i'd always buy these in preference to anything else.
My friends boyfriend is over from germany next month and I have my order in for 6 bags as mine from almost 3 years ago have finally worn outWeight loss since 01/08/07 - 72 lbs:j0 -

I asked the cashier in Asda to replace 2 of my bags for life last time I shopped there and I was told that there wasn't a single bag for life in the store. They are waiting for new stock apparently. So I had no choice but to use the "ordinary" bags.
I'm going again tomorrow, so I will see if they actually have any then.0 -
I went into Asda today and was told that there probably would be no more bags for life as they have been taken off their stock list.
I think a complaint is in order.
They did suggest that they refund my 10p, but isn't it about the principle?0
