Refused for CC because I don't have home phone?!

Yesterday I applied for the Sainsbury's Credit Card. I'm a home owner with £100k equity. Savings of £15k. A good job in the City, so a fair wage, and only one other credit card with £3k on it. No store cards etc.
Sainsbury's declined me and said its because I don't have a home telephone?! I asked if I could give my work number and was advised that they check against BT records to verify and wouldn't have gone through.
This doesnt sound right to me, what if you're on cable or ntl. I've never been refused before, and I actually had the Sainsburys card when it was on 12 months at 0% a couple of years ago, and didnt have a home phone then either!
Any thoughts?!?

I've just successfully applied for a Morgan Stanley card and I did not have a home phone number - it's much cheaper using work phone or PAYG mobile. I just put my mobile number in the home phone box!!
They phoned me at work today and asked a few questions but nothing about that and have approved me! :T
However, that's bad news as I want to apply for a Sainsbury's card - the 0% for 12 months purchases is very tempting.0 -
The BT records also list cable and other operator numbers.Money_Cub wrote:Sainsbury's declined me and said its because I don't have a home telephone?! I asked if I could give my work number and was advised that they check against BT records to verify and wouldn't have gone through.

Well the Sainsbury website kind of gives the opinion you have to be the most perfect citizen in the universe before daring to apply for credit unlike other banks which just say 'Apply NOW' so it doesn't surprise me that they are stricter.0
