I do a complete check of everything in cupboards, fridge, and freezers approximately every 2 wks, for two reasons.
1- so that I can plan meals using what's in there already
2- so I can reorganise it and pack it better - I am one of those sad individuals that likes everything in nice neat rows with the labels facing the same way LOL

Like JackieO and Piget and the same as Bunny - a list on the laptop, using Excel. It's not colour coded (yet!), but just what is it and the approx. weight or number of portions.

It means that I can plan the shopping in my lunch-hour, and do it after work.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

We use a spreadsheet along the following lines, using a different shelf for different products

Food type / Shelf No/ No of Items / Items Used

    Meat
    Spag Bol sauce 1 3
    Sausages 1 3 x half pound
    Lamb chops 1 4
Corned beef hash 1 1 portion

    Fruit
    Gooseberries 2 6 bags
    Strawberries 2 4 bags
Fruit compote 2 Bag for 4
    Fruit compote 2 Medium box
    Apple purree 2 3 bags

    Fish
    Fish pie 3 2 medium
    Smoked haddock 3 4 filets

    Vegs
    Green Beans 4 12 bags
    Chillies 4 2 bags
    Sliced peppers 4 3 bags
    tomato purree 4 6 bags
    Soups 4 3 bottles

We print out the spreadsheet showing grid lines, and leave empy spaces under each food section so that we can add in new items as they're stored. The end column on the right is for listing down items as we remove them. If kept up to date it's useful for menu planning as you can look at the inventory & see what's available at any time.

PS Oops. Now it's printed out the spacing doesn't work. The numbers after each food item are supposed to appear under Shelf Number, & No of Portions. Sorry but didn't know how to make the spacing work..
