New e-reader problem

Last Thursday (10th September) I purchased the new Sony PRS e-reader from Waterstones.

It was working brilliantly until this Wednesday night, when it suddenly wouldn't turn on, get recognised by my pc, or charge on the mains charger. I would point out that it had been fully charged that morning, and still showed three quarters charged before it went kaput.

I intend to take it back to Waterstones tomorrow, but on packing it up (I kept the original packaging thank goodness), I noticed in small print on the warranty, that they will only refund/replace if the return is within 7 days. After 7 days, they send it back to Sony for repairs.

I am not happy at all about this - I feel that after such a short time of ownership, I should be entitled to a replacement and NOT a repair. If I had not had commitments yesterday and today, being out of the house all day, I would have taken it in then, and would have been guaranteed a replacement/refund.

Any comments/advice? I feel that under the Sale of Goods Act, I should be entitled to a replacement/refund, as it is definitely unfit for the purpose I bought it for - reading! What does everyone else think?

Try resetting it using a straighten paper clip in of the ebook - you may have to do this a few times. Mine tends to go into this state when the battery are nearly drained.

    Hope this helps.

    i'd second k314's suggestion.
My 505 has crashed once badly enough that it needed a reset.

Many thanks to you both - it worked!

The battery also seems to have discharged itself so it is now on charge. Will I have lost all the books I have already loaded? If so, I had better put them all on memory stick in case this happens again when I am away from home.

    Thanks again.

the books should still be there (they are saved in flash memory, basically the same as on a memory stick but internally).

You will have to re-set the date and time as well after a reset (I do on mine). The bookmarks should also be preserved.
  • DH's reader did something similar - it would just not charge at all. Have to say turnaround from Sony was excellent - we had it back, repaired within 4 days.
  • Well, at least resetting the device got it working again, thanks to k314 and nilrem, and the data was still there thank goodness.

Still having some problems, though not exactly Sony related. more to do with Adobe Digital Edition. It freezes up every time I connect the ereader to it, to move Angels and Demons onto the reader. Anyone know any way round this?
