    If you rarely use your debit care for big amounts it's always worth phoning the bank beforehand to let them know a big payment is about to go out, even if your card has a high limit on it. It's certainly less embarrassing than having the card rejected for a legitimate expenditure. Many banks will have a limit anyway, so it's wise to check beforehand in case the limit has been changed for some reason.

    He was probably satisfied with the profit achieved. ;)

    I'd have got his agreement on price first, and then asked for a further 2-3% (his costs) off the £4,500, giving £90 - £135 off the price if I paid by debit card instead.

    I would have paid £1 of the balance on the credit card though...just so I still enjoyed full section 75 protection.

    Isn't the minimum transaction £100 for Section 75 protection?

    Minimum value of the purchase. As long as the value of the overall transaction is £100 or more and any amount of that balance is paid by credit card, Section 75 protection applies.
