It's already been re-hung once if the switch is now behind the opened door - it wasn't fitted that way round. Light switches are always fitted on the wall adjacent to the opening edge of the door, that way you don't have to enter the room to switch the light on. If it's not that way now then something has been changed and my money is on the door being re-hung, to open the opposite way to how it originally did.

mmm, i wonder why though, because the door hanging in the other direction is a nonsense, unless for some reason back in the day someone hung it the other way initially, then moved the switch, then the door got hung back in its origional position but the switch wasnt moved???? it is nearly 100 years old so not sure if it would have been built with lights initially...
  • Actually my light switch is also behind the door. I never thought of getting a remote for it. I think I will . The reason mine is in the wrong place is, that when I moved in, old house there were horrible glass sliding doors and the only space big enough for them to slide was on that side. So stupidly I had the house re wired then took the doors off. It has been like that for 20 years now.

Just as a matter of interest, where is this remote control going to be situated. The whole point of a light switch by the door is so that you do not have to walk into a dark room. In my experience the position of the remote control is a bit of a floating feast. If it is in the room, it is unlikely to be very near the door, unless it lives in a holder situated on the wall near to where a light switch would normally be found. If it is not near the door then the whole point of having it is lost. Just get the wiring altered, I think that the op is just looking for reasons not to alter the position of the switch. It is not rocket science to put a bit of carpet back. After all, it has already been cut to the correct size.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

not ideal i know, but you could resite the switch in the hallway side, as you enter the door. (same side of the door frame).
it would be pretty easy to run the cable down the other side of the wall/door frame.
    Get some gorm.

It's possible that the door has been changed but one room in my parents' house has been like this since it was built. The electrician had fitted all the light switches so that they could be easily reached as the door opened into the room. No-one told him - or he forgot - that the smallest bedroom door was going to open against the wall instead of into the room.

The room's going to be redecorated soon and I think we'll change it then but the wiring can be sorted out from the loft so it's easier than the OP's problem.
