Obscured glass vs privacy window film

we will be replacing windows and doors soon(ish) and some have obscured glass in them.

the designs are all different, bathroom, side window, front door and then kitchen door, they all have different patterns, NONE of which i like.

when i was looking at a brochure i saw the 'canterbury' by pilkington glass, and was told this was v expensive, typically it was the only one i liked.

however, i now thought, what if i have normal glass put in when we do them and the get some of this film. having looked on tinternet, these films have nicer designs than the glass ive seen.

what are the pros and cons of the film, would it stand up to a bathroom window?

i like this one http://www.purlfrost.com/partial-obscure.php

  • Hi i have in the past worked for two of the bigger window companies and neither of them charged extra for patterned glass and as far as i'm aware they still don't. Might be worth shopping around a bit more thats if you can manage to sit through all that waffle. Good luck

We use film in our bathrooms- no problems at all. It's great stuff. I didn't really know it existed before. Get some samples- lots of choices of how opaque you want it to be.
  • Always thought the film would be hard to use (getting bubbles out etc) but a friend has recently used some on her window. It is the outside window behind secondary glazeing though so not sure about standing up to steam etc It looks good though.
I wasn't charged extra when I was quoted for obscure glass in dg units either. I found the one that just looked like plain frosted glass was the only that suited a modern home as the other styles were all a bit old fashioned. I've since seen others that would've been ok if I had wanted a pattern, so I guess it's worth checking out a few companies.
The pattern on that film is white, all patterns I have had were just clear, the design in the glass. I'd be concerned about light levels & would need to see it before ordering a huge amount, do they do samples so you can trial it?

I had the proper glass fitted years ago, I was well pleased ... until I realised that I couldn't see out - and that would have been nice to have been able to if I wanted to for any reason. Then I had a bit of a change around of rooms and it became an issue as the bathroom became a bedroom - yet I had that darned glass in it.

I'd go for film. It's not a decision you'll have to live with forever that way.
