Possible Virgin Media Broadband Instalation Scam.

Is it normal for Virgin Media technicians to flyer doors for business?
I only ask because one has supposedly done so to the house I'll be moving into soon for University. However he started to ask more and more personal questions in the premise of doing a credit check before filling in forms tomorrow. I drew the line at providing account number and sort details even if it delays my installation, I had after all phoned a private number of someone I'd never met.
The letter was standard Virgin Media print, but the name and contact number were added later.
He's to come to my home address tomorow to sign off forms, should I proceed?

I don't get whats happened?
Have you signed up to VM? If so how?
When I did it, I did it all online, they sent me the info everything in post (modem etc.) which I set up myself and plugged everything in.
I rang them to tell them everythings done, flick the switch. It didn't work, so the engineer came and did it on one of those green boxes, and done.0 -
I haven't signed up for Virgin Media, it can all be done in-person through their technician.
This "technician" put a flyer with contact information through the door. To speed up the process he wanted to perform a credit check immediatley, before he'd even been to house to set things up, however this involved providing bank details over phone.
I've been told by friends that to go online to organise it would involve a much greater delay.0 -

Around 2 weeks delay I suspect.
Being an internet addict doing a Comptuing degree I managed to wait that long. There are things called books and TVs, and you can always go into uni campus and use their internet.0 -
Getting VM from online took about a week for me, earlier this month. And the previous people hadn't cancelled their previous package, it would have been faster otherwise.
But I definitely wouldn't sign anything for this man, or give him any details, without checking with Virgin first. Phone them on 0800 9 535353 from a landline, or 01752 300 300 from a mobile and check that he really does work for them.
Also, what is he offering you, and at what price? This package is rather elusive on their website, don't know if you've seen it.0 -
It would not be a tech, but VM do have door to door salesmen.Gone ... or have I?0

They used to offer cashback if you did it online too. Can't seem to find it now though, Quidco says "coming soon".
edit: using the cashback tool you can see they used to offer up to £150.0 -

Books are a tough one, terribly incapable of enjoying re-reading books.Getting VM from online took about a week for me, earlier this month. And the previous people hadn't cancelled their previous package, it would have been faster otherwise.

Thanks for the number though, I've been hoping to e-mail VM, but their website requires account numbers, and not being a customer that makes it quite difficult. I will however use one of those numbers.0 -
I ordered online on Thursday and the earliest it could be setup was Monday between 7am and 9am. The website required bank details to set up a direct debit. I got £65 cashback through TCB. Just missed out on the £150 by a few days
I also received a letter through the door from a guy at our local Virgin office. The letter had both his office and mobile phone number - so I assume this is fairly standard. Everything in the leaflet was £4/month more than online!0
