Renting with pets?

I know this isn't strictly money saving but...

Basically my bf proposed the other day and we are now looking at renting somewhere. We have 6 guinea pigs who can live indoors or outdoors. Do you think this will make it harder for us to find somewhere to live?

Ideally i would like them to live inside as we can then find somewhere that doesn't have a garden and will be cheaper.

Would really appreciate anyones views!

Most rentals I've had do not allow pets, although some LLs allow room for negotiation. Mine allowed reptiles once I asked.

Many landlords have a blanket ban on pets because of the damage they do, the fleas they invite and the smells that they leave. You may be able to persuade a reluctant landlord by offering a higher deposit.

How/where do you propose to exercise these guinea pigs without a garden to prevent contact from their faeces, hair and urine on the flooring and furnishings?
  • I was thinking that some might not be too bad about it as they will be kept in cages and not allowed to run on the carpets etc. Also i will obviously keep them really clean, not just for their welfare, but so my house doesn't stink aswell.
  • If they live indoors i will build c&c cages for them which will allow them to have lots of room to exercise.
  • Totally up to individual LL. Will be harder. Would suggest you get a place that gives them a proper quality of life.

Most leases will have a no pets clause. however you can get the landlord's consent. If I were a landlord I might consent to pets living in the garden but no way would I consent to indoor guinea pigs... sorry. Suggest you look for properties with gardens and hope for a flexible landlord!
  • Can i just ask out of interest why you wouldn't allow piggies indoors? Its helpful to know why people wouldn't want it etc.

As a child my lazy sister and I had guinea pigs and we ended up with maggots in their cages, flies in the room, plus we exercised them in the living room on the carpet.

Can't remember if they had a propensity to chew electrical wiring, curtains and wallpaper like other rodents, though, but I've definately seen posts from landlords complaining about nibbled furnishings.

Smell, chew damage, hair, food, facal debris, fleas would be top of the list.

looking to rent once (if) i've sold my house.. I have 3 cats, is this going to be a major problem.. they are adult, no fleas.. clean and well behaved :)

would offering a larger deposit from the off be a good idea?
