Incidentally, does anyone else think it a bit rum that a council is proud to be doing local tradesmen out of business? I presume they are still expected to pay business rates?
    My thoughts exactly.

It would be different if the council operated a voucher scheme to give discounts on the bins at no cost to the retailer, but government directly competing with businesses is just out of order.

I do somewhat resent what someone described earlier as being bribed with our own money - but it does make a pleasant change to actually get to spend the money they've stolen from us on something we want... subject to my above issue with competing with businesses.

My local shower are selling them at a price not too far from those in the shops. I won't be bothering - I'll probably just end up making a couple of wooden compost bins down on my allotment and ferry all the kitchen waste down there.

We want more people to compost, this has made thousands of people have a bin that wouldn't.
Shops sell lots of different things, compost bins are a tiny tiny percentage of them, saying the councils shouldn't compete with them is a little silly, in the large scale it matters not a jot to local business.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
  • I am bumping this thread to raise awareness and also to let people know that some councils still offering discounted compost bins as well as the Bokashi Kitchen composter at a fantastic discounted price. We live in Kettering Northamptonshire and the website is http://www.northants.getcomposting.com/Shop/Kitchen_Composter.html
This allows you to compost ALL types of kitchen waste including meat and fish. Yu can use the end product in your compost bin and the liquid which is drained off is an excellent plant food.
It has made us more aware of how much food we were wasting!! A great product if you can get one.
Hope this encourages some people to compost

  • Wow that is a good deal, certainly worth people checking what their local Council is offering then. Sadly, nothing on offer in my area.
