Wireless laptop cutting out when xbox live on

Hi

Hope someone can help. I not sure exactly why this is happening but everytime my son goes on his xbox live the wireless connection on the laptop cuts out. I though it was coincidence but its now happening everytime.

I have a netgear dg834g which is connected via cable to pc both laptop and xbox live are wireless. It is a 4 port router so they should all work together.

Any suggestions greately appreciated.

Thanks

have you altered any settings on the router since you had it?
How old is the router by the way?

I thinks its happening because the router has given the laptop 1 ip address and when the xbox connects it gives the xbox teh same ip as the laptop which then kick the laptop off the connection, you need to get the router to give either the laptop or xbox a different ip address

    Thanks DCFC79 & Exup.

I havent changed any settings and the router is about 18 months old.

Can you tell me how I would give each device a separate ip address on the router. Is it just a case of going onto the router and manually typing an ip address for each device. Not very knowledgable about this but I have checked my router (lan ip setup) and there is a section for address reservation.
  • No ooooooo. The other way round. Set the routers DHCP to OFF. Give each device a unique ip in the 10,10.x.x or 192.168.x.x range and Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0. Maybe a little more tweaks.

But your problem... 4 port hub, ethernet (straight, not crossover) cat5 cables, Router DHCP ON, devices all set to DHCP, Auto. All on the same network, i.e. Workgroup or Home, all pc's must be the same group. Make sure its a 4 port hub not 3 ports with an uplink and cables in good condition.
  • change the wifi channel on the router

I think the Xbox may be eating up all of the bandwidth, and leaving you with not enough to keep a decent connection going.
If you look at your broadband router, the lights will start to flash like crazy when the Xbox is connected.

    Thank you all

I will have time tomorrow so will try set up separate ip addresses for all and see how we go.
