husband leaves me with debt?
my husband as left me ,leaving me to pay bills.
i know we were in arrears with council,tax.rent(overpayment.
he was working part time(16 hours per week)
the question is he wants the name taken of our tenacey agrrement and sent a letter to the housing department were we live, but they said no ,reason still is there is arrears.
but now i have to pay them at so much per week,is this correct,in other words it seems to me ,that i am paying the debt back and he is not.
also the arrears in rent and council tax.i have to make arangements to pay.
it seems that i pay he dosent, can any one tell if this is correct.
i am claiming jsa

As you have been equally responsible for the household debts and you are remaining in the property, it will have to be you who pays the arrears otherwise everybody could transfer a tenancy into a partner's name and avoid paying them.
As he was only working part time, weren't you receiving HB/LHA? If not then, are you now?0 -
sorry to say it one leaves the other, usually the one left behind is left to pick up the pieces.. unless you have his new address and argue with the who the debts are with that he is equally liable and they should also chase him.
i was in your boat 10 years ago, he leaves, (we divorced i asked him to leave) he refuses to pay i then spend the next 10 years paying back the debts whilst current bills turn to debts whilst waiting to be paid. I didn't speak to any debt advisers, or such.. if i had then maybe i wouldn't of taken so long to clear the !!!!!! he left me in, but i would try to get him to pay upLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -

many thanks for your qiuck replies, yes i am going to get advice,to me its strange that a person, who stays behind ,as to pay all the debts, yes i know were he lives now and i will tell the people who we owe debts to0 -
If debt is in joint names you are liable and easier to pursue - so they will go for you first. If they have an address for him, they will equally pursue him - most creditors will NOT split the debt but it has been done (I did it for a bank loan years ago, but this is very rare).0
