Warmroof Rigid Foam advice please

Sorry if this is a bit long winded.

At the Ideal Home Show I spoke to a company called Warmroof who insulate the roof by spraying foam onto the underside of the roof tiles. The surveyor came on Saturday but when they called the OH to arrange the visit she was told that both of us had to be there (alarm bells start to ring). When he arrived the first thing I did after introducing myself was to tell him that I never (underlined and in bold) sign any documents on the day no matter how good the deal or whatever the “special offer for today only” is.

The survey was completed and I was expecting the “this needs to be done and this” etc but he said the roof was in very good order except that the ridge could do with repointing and the chimney flashing needed replacing. After this he went to his car to work out the figures, and bearing in mind at no time were any prices shown to me he returned with his quote which he told me was guaranteed for 6 months. We were entitled to a 20% discount for being at the show (their website gives everybody 20% off) and VAT at 5% thanks to a government incentive. Total price was just under £4400 which included a 25% deposit of £1100. However (hear we go) as they had a job planed in the area in a few weeks time if I had it done at the same time then I could get an extra saving of £550 as long as I agreed to the work by Monday.

Well I was away on Monday and when I got back there were a few calls from the surveyor asking if we had made a decision. The OH and I were going to give it a miss as we decide we had other things we needed the money for when we got the call from head office!!!(here we go again).

“We still have jobs in the area and you would be helping us etc etc” They offered to do the work for £3100 plus installing a Colt Roto roof window which according to them cost £600 and then five minutes later it cost £800 (which I later found on the internet for £120). It would also be on their 0% bye now pay later scheme with just £310 down and no payments for 12 months. If we decided to pay the full figure at that point that would be that however if we didn’t pay it off it would revert to a 4 year repayment plan.

I’m not one to jump into these kind of things particularly where these sorts of figures are involved and especially when you realise that had I signed on the day I could have been £1300 worse off. Why do these companies use these tactics because they just make me very suspicious and more likely to say no.

I would just like to make it clear that I am not accusing this company of any wrong doing however I would like to know your thoughts and any personal experiences of people who have used them.

I think i am right in saying that it is only the same foam that you can buy in cans from most diy shops.I bet with a bit of research, you could probably hire the necessary equipment and spray it on yourself for a fraction of the cost.I was once quoted several hundred pounds to spray my house timbers for woodworm.I hired a pump and bought the chemicals myself and did the job for less than a hundred. If you would like it done by someone else, there will be proper firms out there that don't stoop to these pressure selling tactics.Ring the local council and see if they have an approved list of people doing this sort of thing.

As soon as I read this
Total price was just under £4400 which included a 25% deposit of £1100.
    I laughed out loud.

£4400 for spraying a load of foam?

What's warm and rigid and yours for £4400?
    Happy chappy

Six month guarantee?? What good is that? Tell them to shove it. Good idea to do it yourself and get a mate to do your ridge tiles (easy job) and flashing if you can't go on roofs.

Sorry to confuse but It was the price that was guaranteed for six months not the work, that was covered for 25 years.

isn't this stuff a bit of a pain though. I'm sure I read stuff that basically spraying this on makes the retiling of your roof in future nigh on impossible (hence why they put the window in at the time so hopefully you don't notice anytime soon)

    edit: http://groups.google.co.uk/groups/search?ie=UTF-8&q=warmroof+foam

other queries tend to be about impact on resale value due to surveyors not being able to inspect roof and potential that any faults with roof currently will be escalated as timbers can't dry out etc.
  • Has anyone had this type of insulation installed since this thread & others were posted?

I had warmroof come around today - the surveyor was very helpful & there was no hard sell (which I was expecting  ). I have a roof problem that will cost £2-3K to fix (by a builder I trust & have used many times) & warmroof have given a rough quote of £3.5-4K to do repair work, install a window & insulate.

    Any comments anyone?
& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D

    Hi,
Once the insulation is fittied, the company should also guarentee the tiles from slipping aswell, as they are boned to the insulation
we moved into our house which has this stuff on, to be honest dont really know if it makes any difference what so ever as if you have got good loft insulation then you shouldnt need this stuff on as all you are doing is warmin you loft space..

    Hi,

Has anyone had installed recentlly this type of insulation? What are your views on it? Is it as good as the paper says or are there any other factors that should be taken into consideration? I just need to insulate the loft and this seems like a good idea to make the loft usable as a nice storage are.

What are the views of someone that used Warmroof to install it?

    thank you all

    ok?

I'll second that, if you ever have any problems with your roof you will be screwed. This was covered on rogue traders or something similar last year (the product, not the company) and it wasn't recommended to say the least.
