    Work:
Pencil skirt or some fitted trousers. Mary Jane type shoes, comfortable and come in various heel heights.
Cardigans or a boyfriend style blazer. Fitted tops in various colours. Maybe a nice belt?

    Pub:
Jeans, get a pair that fit you well, try on several (I'm not all that familiar with Tesco clothes though, sorry)
A shirt dress/tunic...a long shirt basically that can be worn over slim fit jeans and pulled in with a belt. Add jewellery and heeled boots and you have a nice smart, but not overly dressed up pub outfit.

Home: I normally go for yoga pants and hoodies, so not much help there!

Dressed up: A nice shift dress, or something that has a nipped in waist.

    Hope that helps a little?!
    :o

Im about the same size as you and Ive never really been one for dresses until recently. When the legging crazy came about i SWORE i would never own a pair, but here I am, sat in work in my dress and leggings!

    I would go for:

    Leggings. Black and Brown pair.
Knee high boots. Black and brown - if you can only get one, go for black. And not hooker heel types - yes to heel, no to stiletos - for a classier look.
Dresses (to be worn over leggings / boots if ya like!)Up to the knee - A line if possible (this will make your tummy look flatter - as will floral prints.)
Long jumpers with (or without for a more slouchy look) thick belts will be very in this winter with skinny jeans / leggings.
Fitted jacket / blazer to smarten ANYTHING up
Hats and scarfs in contrasting colours to your out fit. (I tend to buy one hat and scarf in a colour that I rarely wear clothes in (grey is good for me!)))
The obvious rules for anyone above a size 12 of staying away from shorter tops - I always buy long line things - makes body look longer and leaner.
Maxi dresses look awesome on shorter people - my best friend is 5'2 and about the same dress size as me and she looks amazing in maxi dresses, where at 5'6 i look a bit messy! (It does help that she is quite small chested i guess!)

Other than that, Brunettes look great in bright winter colours (think teal / red / royal blue / purple) but most (dependant on skin tone) will look washed out in pales like yellow/ cream etc. Blondes suit black (obviously!) and white and summer colours (orange - brighter pinks etc ) Redheads suit more earth colours.

Obviously skintone plays an important part in the above so its not gospel - just a general look!

I bought (sad, i know) the trinny and suzannah "what not to wear 2" book which had a colour chart in it - i.e what colour to wear - what colour to wear with it and what colour to accessorise with it) which was really good!! I bet you could find that online somewhere!! :0)
  • Thanks a lot for allyour help on the clothes bit - just off to Ts now and will start off with some leggings - will have a look for the T and S book in there aswell as can get that on vouchers if they have it in stock.
Im quite pale ( get the greige colour in a few weeks) brown hair which i sometimes put reddish lowlights in . So if I get the book it will help with colours. I had not really thought about them yet i was so confused as what to buy.
You have both been great - :A
the only sad thing is not being allowed to buy/wear killer stillies:eek: I suppose that shows an age thing - i will look for a normal heel.
Someone offered me ugg boots the otherday for free i said no as they were flat . didnt realise how dear the were till saw them on line - but dont know whether i could bring myself to wear them they r a bit hairy and flat i would probably look like a hobbit in leggings.:rotfl:
Will print out ideas and take them with me.

    Hi

I was about to post something very similar. I'm 60 and recently retired. When I went to sort out my winter clothes I was horrified to discover that I only have 2 wearable pairs of trousers and some stuff that is up to 10 years old! Clothes shopping seems to get more difficult the older you get!. There is some nice stuff out there but it takes some hunting down.

Tesco clothing is going online soon, and the Daily Mail regularly have money off coupons for clothing. Their trousers fit me perfectly, but as I'm fairly tall most of their tops are too short.

I'm making a list of things that will update my existing wardrobe -

Definitely - a pair of lace up leather shoes that I can walk in, like trainers but more feminine, perhaps in 2 colours of leather. I have a lot of shoes but most of them hurt my feet.

A grey knitted waitcoat or tunic, sleevless of short sleeved to go over a mauve polo neckedsweter, and various blouses

A scarf to update my winter coat.

Some long sleeved T shirts (to layer and for keep fit/yoga (possibly from Gap.)

Possibly 1 or 2 pairs of boots.

Ballet style pumps in red or coral to go with the grey.

A grey/black striaght skirt (I'm bored with trousers).

Winter lasts a long time and I feel a shopping trip coming on!
  • you r defo sorted with what u want - i am still not that organised.
went to Ts tonight and got leggings black with zip on bottom £7
and a black top £16 that is quite thick material (its like a tracksuit material)with 2 zip pockets low down when i tried it on it was really more like a dress with a deep tighter band at the bottom.
will experiment tomorrow and see f it look ok with thick tights.
Tied on the jean leggings but could not find anything to go with them -
Tried on some long tops one with a girls face on with sequins were the eye is rey with black , and another with a pattern accross with blck and gold. Not sure what to put under these as they r both short sleeved
tHRE WAS ALSO A BIG BLACK JUMPER THAT WAS LONG WITH DEEP WELT AND BAT WINGS - but thought perhaps too much black even though slimming. Not sure what to wear under this as had a very low v neck - any ideas?

I find now i go for the quality of the clothes. Buy a really good fitting pair of jeans. Im 5ft 2" so i wear heels and Saintly Linda is spot on with whats shes posted. Theres a couple of good casual dresses in Tesco at the moment and you can dress them up or down. I dont try and buy a lot of things in one go but i look for an item i can mix and match, ie a wrap dress which goes with leggings and boots or tights and shoes. Dont be afraid of mixing colours its surprising what works, Grey and Purple, Black and Brown etc. Accessories also make an outfit and i find Primarks accessories cheap and therefore you can mix and match them. Clothes i tend to spend a bit more on one off items like dresses, jeans, floaty tops and spend a bit less on leggings, tights and accessories. My tesco have just bought in the autumn range of casual dresses, legging etc. Ive noticed that now im older classic things work, ie skinny jeans, white shirt and tan/brown knee length boots, and whilst shopping i bumped into 2 young girls i work with and they said i should take them shopping as they said i know what goes with what, i said it years of experience and mistakes lol, and i still make them as i did on a previous thread with a top i bought
  • spent hours last night in Ts trying on clothes - must be fatter than i thought (or Ts are not as generous with material) as the tops were a bit tight and i had to pull them up - didnt quite look right . Good job i didnt buy them as looking at some sites for clothes i realise they r to be worn straight . None of the sites i looked at had the long big tops w/o sleeves that T had .Also looked at this morning i had taped last week they said boyfriend jacket was last year and oversize this year look - I quite fancied the boyfriend jacket in Ts and it looks nice on the poster they have in the shop but may leave that for now.

Coral what dresses did u see that would go over leggings ? can u give me some ideas please
Will go back today and get

dresses to go over black leggings
    jean leggings
v neck bat wing jumper (had these in black or red)
  • Hi
Sorry to jump on your bandwagon OP but I am 46 and struggle to find things I feel look good and that I feel good in! When I am at home I wear joggers most of the time as they are so comfortable, but always try to make an effort when I go out of the house.
It is very difficult knowing how to get it just right without looking like mutton dressed as lamb or looking frumpy!
I bough a pair of leggings (after swearing I would never wear them again) but just don't know what to put with them so I look right for my age! Can anyone post me a link to the sort of tops/dresses I should be wearing with them? By the way I'm about 5'4" and a size 12 but have a flabby tummy and big thighs!

I think the Next website is really useful for ideas about how to put looks together and for contemporary ideas on how to wear different items and accessorise. Most of their clothes are shown as complete outfits on a model as opposed to just the isolated item. (It doesn't matter that you're not the same shape as the model....it's the style ideas and 'mood' you're pinching, to adapt to your own body-shape )

    http://www.next.co.uk/shopping/women/leggings/1/

As you get older, one of the problems tends to be that you are out of touch with the new fresh twist that the younger generation manages, that brings the look up-to-date. These 'twists' can easily adapted to suit all ages and keep the look fresh.

It's really worth investing some time checking out style ideas before you shop, making some notes, then going shopping 'on a mission', to find one or two perfect pieces at a time!
