Mini I-Pod,did it exist?

My eldest daughter was after a Mini I-Pod for Christmas,so rather than get the usual naff stuff off relatives, she asked for cash instead. She actually got £170.

Now,saying as Mini I-Pods were in very short supply,we spotted plenty on E.Bay,and in fact she won one for £160 from a seller in Preston, who,to be fair, was listed as a new seller.

Now as I have bought many things off E.Bay,and in fact have a 100% record,I know most of the pitfalls,so I asked the seller if I could collect via my job,and would put pound notes in his hand. This would also save on postage,so she would have about £10 spare to spend on something else. (After all, this is what MSE is about, right?)

To date, after 2 e.mails,we have had no reply, but luckily no money has changed hands,so I'm not unduly worried, but what should I do as regards the transaction, and the feedback rating that will follow?

I have asked in the 2nd mail,if the item actually exists, because what with the shortage on the retail market of them, this person could be trying to ruin someone's day by claiming they have one,and then ripping them off for their money.

Over to you Ladies and Gentlemen.

I would wait for a reply to the two emails you sent, before doing anything else. If the selller files a non-paying buyer claim to get their fees back, you will get an email from ebay.

I understand your desire to collect in person (I would want to do the same in the circumstances), but you should ask if this is possible before bidding, not after. There may be a genuine reason why the seller does not want you to collect, and asking before bidding saves any argument afterwards.

Whatever happens, don't be bullied into doing something that you are not happy with. If you don't pay, the worst that can happen is that you have a NPB filled against your account.

Alternatively call up their contact details and give them a call. It is sometimes easier to judge in a call whether someone sounds genuine rather than trust e mails.

However, if they decide they do not want you/your daughter to collect then as the previous poster has said they would be perfectly entitled to put a strike on your account as a non paying bidder and neg you accordingly.

The seller sets the terms of the auction, not the buyer. If buying this item was dependent on being able to collect you should have cleared this with the seller first.

    Well the plot thickens........

Before we go any further on this issue,I suggest you look at the link below, and judge this seller for yourself......

This guy will soon be Naru'd its obvious he is scamming people probably hoping to be paid instantly with Paypal then withdrawing the funds.

Get his contact details from EBay and call him. At which point I think you will find they are false. Then report to EBay.

After which I think you shouldf just buy elsewhere without fear.

Looking at his selling history it certainly looks dodgy. High price items from a new seller and no positive feedback despite some sales finishing on the 20th December which should have given time for receipt of goods and mutual feedback.

I also notice that very few high feedback buyers bothered to bid, people with large positive feedback got that way by being ultra cautious, I know I did  :)

Definitely don't send payment now. As already suggested call up his contact details and see if that comes back with false information and if so report him to ebay. Or alternatively just sit back as I doubt whether a scammer will bother chasing you for payment.

Oh, and I just love the irony of the scammer falling foul of another scammer...see the bidder jade9500b!

Well I guessed this would provoke some replies,so much so,that between my last posting and this,my daughter has,in fact, bought a Philips Go-Gear Jukebox,(Similar to an I-Pod) for £149.99 from Argos. Not as much memory as an I-Pod,but still capable of holding 1000 tunes.Enough for even the most music loving teenager!!!!

I will now give this jerk a negative feedback, and also report him/her to E.Bay.

One thing I am pleased about,is the fact NO money changed hands,so I guess I may well have been one of the lucky ones.

I would suggest holding off from leaving feedback for the time being, what will you neg him for? Yes he looks like scammer and I would certainly not suggest parting with any money, but all he has done so far is not return your e mails. Ebay suggest a time frame of three working days for contact and you haven't really given him that yet so anyone reading the feedback you leave might consider you a little trigger happy leaving a neg for non contact so quickly especially over the quiet time between Christmas and new Year.

You have plenty of time to leave feedback assuming he doesn't get NARU'd first, so leave it a while.

Buying an I-pod from a 0 rated seller who registered an account only a few days earlier, with only stock photos of the I-Pod in their ebay listing, and who had a stack of other desirable electronic goodies for sale.....

    You obviously like living dangerously.

To be fair, everyone has to start somewhere, but at least he never got any of my daughters money, but I can't speak for any of the others that had bid on the other items that he had for sale.

One thing I did get,was the guys details off E.Bay,and included in that was a mobile phone number. This makes it sound even more dodgy, but at least a formal complaint has now gone in,so we'll have to wait and see the result of the E.bay invetigation.

    I'll keep you posted.
