Hi,
I've spent a lot of time in Berlin in the past but took my partner for their first visit last year.
For getting around, you can buy a multitute of multi-journey tickets valid on all forms of transport - see http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/Bvg/Index/folder/709/name/Fares+Overview (also search for WelcomeCard and CityTourCard on the same site)
For seeing some of the main, central sights, I would wholeheartedly recommend doing one of the walking tours, Some are paid for upfront (~10e), others are "free", but the guide's rely on tips. We did a free one and our guide was so good we tipped him the same price as the paying tours tho some people just gave him a couple of Euro's. See http://www.newberlintours.com/nbt/content/view/1/2/lang,en/
hope you have a great time!0 -
Was in Berlin a couple of weeks ago. We actually walked a lot of places, it's much more pleasant to walk in than London not so manic. Anyway, that saved us a lot of money.
You can eat cheaply -plenty of kebab stands (proper Turkish fare, not greasy rubbish), currywurst if you;re that way inclined and loads of vietnamese food.
The East Side Gallery is well worth visiting and is free - it's a part of the Berlin Wall that is still standing and has been painted by artists.0 -
Anything worth seeing is in the old east side.
We did a few walking tours with - http://www.brewersberlintours.com/ which were great!
Karl Marx Allee is worth a walk down for the architecture and the Stasi Museum is a bit futher down there.
Areas with good restaurants and bars - Kreuzberg, Prenzlaurberg, Helmholtzplatz, Treptow (floating bars on the canal)
Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp - free entry and a train ride away (still within the Berlin ABC zone)
Avoid Checkpoint Charlie - manned by !!!!!!-stars in inaccurate uniforms. Nothing is original as evidenced by the grammatical errors in the signs. Also the TV Tower is expensive to get up and you can get a similar view from the top of the Reigstag dome which is free.
The day/2 day/4 day travel passes are great and can be used on all the trams, trains, S-Bahn and U-Bahn.
I love Berlin and can't wait to go back - cheap compared to other European cities.0 -
We did a day trip to Berlin last Thursday courtesy of Ryanair for a total cost of 4 p. Try to go midweek if you can. They fly into Schoenefeld Airport which is about 30 min by train to the centre.
You can buy a ticket at the airport from the tourist info counter for 6.50 euro which allows you unlimited travel on all modes of transport throughout Berlin and Potsdam.
Berlin is a great place with a lot to see. Like I said we were there the other day but it was about 4 degrees and raining and it will only get colder . Nevertheless we had a good day. Food was cheaper than many European cities. Try the Berlin currywurst, mmmmm!!! We will go back there for a few days when the weather warms up.0
