'Pathways to work' (Incap benefit to tax credits).. info?

Hi there everyone, I'm new to the site so hello everyone!

I am currently recieving Incapacity benefit. I am thinking about doing some training to eventually start self-employed work.
My concerns/issues...
*I suffer from severe anxiety and depression, the last year has been rocky and I've come off medication. I am worried if I jump in the deep end after so long of being out of work it will be too much.

*I cannot afford the training I want to do (course fees)

Tax credits/JPP/Pathways to work.....
I've done some research and I heard about Pathways to work.
  • I wonder would they pay for course fee's?
  • I heard of JPP, they say they pay course fees, but is it still available and am I entitled to it?...
  • also if I start work will I qualify for Working Tax credits if I'm working for myself and have a low income?
My concerns about working tax credits is..
1) I don't know if I qualify (if I don't how can make myself qualify
2) it seems to me a pittyfull amount of money according to the HMRC (£1462 for year! what if I don't make any money! that 28 pound a week!)

Anyway... any advice... I don't want to go to Incap support people yet, as I'm scared they'll chuck me off benefits for even thinking of working.

Thank you... sorry it was long winded... but really ANY answers or help is appreciated, you don't have to answer it all.

  • You really need to go and talk to the disability specialist at the Job Centre. They won't take your current benefits off you at all.

If you are on your own, without children, in order to qualify for WTC you need to be in receipt of DLA. You could apply for DLA and see what happens. Have a look at the Working Tax Credits website for full details.

The full rate of WTC and working over 30 hours per week, with the disability element is nearly £400 per month.

If you are intending going self-employed your local Business Link will be very helpful to you. The Job Centre also has access to all sorts of grants, etc.

Do go and see the disability specialist and see what they have to say

    Good luck
