Anyone having a Hog roast or been to a wedding with one?

  • We had our first hog roast at a birthday party and absolutely loved it. A couple of years later when planning our wedding, we were looking at catering options for the evening - as soon as we saw Hog Roast as an option we went for it.
    We did think it seemed quite expensive at first - set price of around £800 which included baps, salad, stuffing. But when we compared it to the caterers buffet or bbq menus it worked out to be quite a bit cheaper per head. All the guests loved it - we were worried what the older ones would think of the informalness of it all, no one found it messy and everyone had plenty.

    I think as ours was done through our caterers it was a bit more expensive than than it would otherwise have been - i think the one we had had at the birthday party was done by a hog roast company, and was about £350
  • A hog roast has been come up as an idea for my friends wedding too, she has a budget of £5k, but as we are only having one meal we thought that £600+ was far to expensive, after all you only get a roll and some meat. The lastest idea is a BBQ but to be honest I have seen quotes for £12 a head just for sausages, burgers, and a vegi option, so although they sound good, i dont think they are great value for money.
    Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.
  • We're having a hogroast in the evening, £10 per head for bread rolls, stuffing, sauces, salads, and the hog! only thing is I've asked them to cook it in the kitchen and bring it out chopped up as I don't think I'd like al ittle piggy sat in the corner of the room being spit roasted while we're dancing around!!! most companies do it outside and set up under a gazeebo which would be fab.

    where weddings are concerned, value for money tends to go out the window, unless you are prepared to DIY

    If looking at a bbq (offering basic items), have they not thought to contact a local burger van? i know someone standing at a bbq in chefs whites looks a bit more presentable, but some of the more modern vans are quite space age, and dont look at all greasy spoon. if serving similar food, i just wondered if the burger van, might keep the costs down a bit. even if they charged their standard price per items, it would still only be about £7 per head, for 2 items, or they might even be prepared to do a deal

    We're having a hog roast, catered by the venue, with nice salads and a lovely-sounding vegi option for £17 per head. (Which I think is quite expensive, so will try and haggle a bit)
    When we first started looking, thinking we were having a marquee, I found some outside caterers for £500 for 80ish people - but that was just the meat and a bun, no salads. They'd do salads but that was on top. The only issue is that they all did seem to have a minimum number of people to cater for. And of course they all had good testimonials on their websites! Just google it - loads came up for round our area (yorks/lancs border).
    Good luck and hope you have a lovely day when it comes
  • we had a hog roast and it was lovely,

    we did the rest of the catering ourselves (family's land used) and just had the chap come in and cook the hog on his portable spit roast bbq thingy

    we had one pig, 50 guests and leftovers enough for the next week for family to enjoy.

    i think it was about £300 (in the south) but i have never had better tasting pork in my life

    :)

  • I actually have some really good buffett quotes for £5-6 a head, with quite a lot included, so we might go that route. And throw in a couple of extra's we can make the day before, but not have to worry about doing all the catering. The quotes I have are for Assorted Sandwiches,
    Fish Platter

    eg. Salmon Brochettes, Prawn Toast,

    Oriental Seafood Dimsum garnished with Lemons

    and served with a Tarragon Dip

    Chicken Platter

    eg. Chicken Goujons, Spicy Chicken Fillets, Chicken Sate

    served with a Dip

    Vegetable Platter

    eg. Cheese Goujons, Feta and Spinach Goujons, Vegetable Nuggets

    Vegetable Sate, Jalapols, Pizza Parcels, etc

    Mini Indian Selection

    or
    Various fresh sandwiches,wraps and/or rolls;
    Various flavoured fresh homemade chicken skewers OR chicken goujons OR lamb kebab;
    Various flavoured fresh homemade quiches i.e. cheese & bacon, 3 cheese, cheese & cranberry or apricot etc
    Asian, Oriental and Cajun selection i.e. various veg/meat/prawn spring rolls, onion bhajees, vegetable samosas, prawn wonton, mini duck/chicken fajita, Cajun mushrooms, Cajun onion rings, Cajun potato wedges, prawns on skewers, potato/spinach pakora etc;
    Cake or Dessert platter;
    Fresh seasonal fruit platter;
    Nibble tray OR Crudit!s OR mixture

    I am quite happy with these. Although I am still looking for better.
