Problem with Carpetright

  • What are they doing laying new carpet on old underlay. We always recommend new underlay - when I used to sell carpet if there was a problem with the carpet the first question the manufacturers used to ask was 'was it laid on a quality new underlay? Almost nothing (other than incorrect weight /type of carpet for use) will affect how a carpet performs than what it is laid over.

Im not sure if you mean me or the OP :) but if me - OH had told them the underlay was only 18 months old and we were told "superior" quality. So, we thought we wouldnt need a new lot. When they stripped off the carpet they found it was thin tatty stuff.

if it costs you £200+ to have this repaired you are most definately getting robbed!!!!!!! all Carpetright fitters are supposed to be fully covered by public liability insurance, however, i dont think that this would be covered under this type of insurance,(check small print). Alarm cables should not be installed under floor coverings.!!!!

6 weeks old but noticed something no one else had spotted, quite relevant too.
  • I am a carpet fitter and my question would be were the wires visible to the fitter, If not was the fitter made aware that there were hidden live wires. You have a duty of care to the fitter working on your property to make him aware of any hazards re live hidden wiring. Also old underlay is not always replaced, It is dependent on condition of old underlay.
  • Shame the OP isn't into DIY - parts for this would cost £20 max (to junction boxes and cable).

Whilst I agree with Carpetright's comments in that cables shouldn't be hidden beneath carpets, particularly on stairs, the fact of the matter is that they were and the fitter should have taken reasonable care to protect both himself and the customer.
