Hi All,
I wonder if anyone can help. I have a 54Mbps Wirwless ADSL Firewall Router DG834G and today I plugged in a Freecom Classic SL Network Drive 250Gb.

I can see the new external hard drive and managed to store things on it. However I discovered I couldnt get onto the internet anymore or MSN !
When I unplugged the External Hard Drive I could go on the internet.

Can anyone tell me how I can get my system so that the new External Hard Drive can be used and the internet at the same time ?

I did a serach and couldnt find the answer can anyone help me ?

Thanks

Oh not good news, the reason I got a Network External Drive was so that I didnt have to use the USB conection and carry the External Drive around with my laptop !

I have automatic updates set on, so would that mean I got the winxp updates you are talking about ?

Do I need to keep the drive powered on all the time or will the data just be stored indefinately ? So at least when I dont need the drive I could turn it off and get back on the internet.

the power would come thru the usb connection,. yes if u dont need the drive un plug it,. there should be a icon next too ur Time with a green arrow saying "salfty remove hardware"
  • never heard of that exact problem, but I also too recommend trying it in other USB sockets, so if your router is plugged into the ones on the back try your router in the front ones (or vice versa).

Having said that, some new routers have USB sockets built in for network storage (check if yours has) if it has then plug it into the router instead.

    To ahll, from the manual:
I’ve just installed Classic SL Network Drive software, and now my internet does not work.

This can happen when used with McAfee Virus Scan Professional 7.0; you must disable HAWK Script Stopper in McAfee, before installing our software.
Even if you don’t have that specific piece of software, if you have any McAfee security-related software, see if there’s a setting for a script stopper. If that isn’t relevant, try getting the latest software from Freecom Support. Choose Classic Network Drive Series from the dropdown list. If it still doesn’t work, try calling or emailing Freecom, using the details on that support page?

To everyone else, it’s a network drive. It attaches to the ADSL router using a piece of Ethernet cable. Ok, it also has a USB socket, so it can operate as a normal USB hard drive. But, as ahll said, that defeats the purpose of having it.

    Thanks Alfie,
I was just about to make it clear that I plugged the External Drive into the router via Ethernet cable not usb.

I do run McAfee on my laptop so as you suggest I will try to disable HAWK Script Stopper but not done this before ! Will doing this cause me any problems with anything else ? Do I need to re-start it afterwards ?

Obviously HAWK script stopper is there for a reason, but looking at the web, mostly it appears to stop legitimate programs from working (including ACT and Visual Studio)!!

Make sure you leave the rest of Mcafee running, and dont surf dodgy websites (as usual), and im sure you will be fine after disabling the HAWK part.

You probably will need to reboot after changing the Mcafee configuration. Its always a good thing to do after changing that sort of thing (make sure it doesnt re-enable HAWK).

I dont think you will be able to use the HAWK unless either Mcafee or Freecom updates their software.

    Hi
I looked on Mcafee but I couldnt see anything relating to HAWK ! Should I be looking from some other option ?

As I couldnt find it I disabled then installed the software from Freecom website anf then re-booted. The same thing happens I can't have the External Drive and the Internet on at the sametime !

I reactivated Mcafee but disabled the ActiveSchield part of it and tryed to install again.

There was a message saying 'The software you are installing has not passed Wondows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.
Continuing your installation of the software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your syste either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop the installation now and contact the software vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing'

As per the instruction I opted to continue the installation. Then when it came to loading the NDAS SCSI Controller' I got the same message and again opted to continue.

Result I can see and access the External Drive but can't get onto the internet or MSN. I used the 'MSN Mesenger Connection Troubleshooter' to try and sort out the problem. It identified that there was a problem with the DNS and Key Ports.

I tried to repair and "MSN Messenger Connection Troubleshooter' was unable to identify and repair connection problem'

    Any suggestions ?

that Windows didnt like the software as it didn't have a certificate (Can't remember exact wording) but I pressed the option to carry on anyway and install it.

So still trying to sortout the problem
