Waht is it like being BR?

Can anyone tell me what is it like being BR? Does friends leave you? Do they laugh at you? Does your employer penalize you? Does family members judge you? What is like? I am very nervous as I will be going BR on Monday 21 Sept 09.

When will OR interview takes place after Court date?

I am really anxious and have not sleep for nights. Please advice.

Much appreciated.

  • No one will have to know about your BR unless you tell them. The OR interview takes place about 1-2 weeks later depending how busy they are. Please don't be anxious - it is the lead up to bankruptcy that is nervewracking - the bankruptcy itself is easy! I promise. Read all you can on this forum and post up your soa for guidance ASAP. http://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html

If you read and read this forum you will know exactly what to expect and it takes away the anxiety. Ask any questions you can think of.

  • When I went BR I was so nervous and anxious. I felt like people could tell I was BR just by looking at me or I felt like I needed to profess my financial status to friends/family and even passers by and I too worried about my employer. Of course, there were very few I told as I felt guilty for going BR esp when those I looked to for support where in debt themselves. All these worries/fears were completely unfounded and just in my mind because of how anxious I was feeling. It can be nerve wracking but once its done you will start to (even if its slowly) feel better and the relief, well, nothing can describe that feeling! Give yourself a break and dont worry, just think that youre moving ahead in a positive way to get your life back, now where's the worry in that?
  • After been BR myself i can assure you that after the inital nerves things are not as bad as you may believe.
to answer your questions, firstly any "friends" that leaver you or laugh at you are not really friends so don't worry about that, real friends will stand by you whatever.
Most employers are not bothered unless you work somewhere like a bank or finance house sort of job. what may happen is you could be but on the NT ( no tax) coding until the end of the financial year and pay the tax you would have paid to the court instead as I had to and as long as these payments are met your discharge should follow fairly quickly.

After your discharge you start again from scratch albeit with no access to credit but personally my life is now a lot better with a new job. ( I left my previous one of my own choice ) a new car thanks to the scrappage scheme and n o debts to worry about.

Get it over with and enjoy your new start, have faith in youself and good luck

Thats it, i am done, Blind-as-a-Bat has left the forum, for good this time, there is no way I can recover this account, as the password was random, and not recorded, and the email used no longer exits, nor can be recovered to recover the account, goodbye all …………. :(
  • For me its been waaaaaay better than I expected it to be - no friends have deserted us, my new boss couldn't give a damn (and has helped me find legal advice on certain matters), no one has stood laughing and pointing at me in the street :D!, and all correspondence with the OR has been amiable and pretty swift.
    BR 26th Jan 09 . . . Discharged 21/9/09 !!! :j:j:j

Answer: The same as everyone else.

Think about yourself and the benefits rather than worrying about what others think

Hubbie went BR 2 months ago yesterday. BR itself was a nicer experience than ever could of imagined, the staff at the court were lovely.
Has been quite a lot of questions from the OR to answer, but was a buisness related BR so to be expected. With OR honesty definately right policy, they're not daft and can see anything dodgy from a mile off. But very nice as well, so try not to worry, although that's easier said than done - I know !
His employer didnt mind a jot and was fine about it. So far only one of the creditors got a bit nasty, and the bank doesnt even seem to have cottoned on yet !!!
Only told my parents & few friends and all have been very supportive.

To be honest anyone who gives him a hard time will have me to deal with, BR unfortunately happens and those lucky enough to walk through life without knowing the heartache debt causes are blessed. I'll never think "it could never happen to me" and anyone who does is deluded.

Good luck, know it will be a very long weekend for you, but come monday afternoon it will be such a relief and you wont have sprouted a big sign above your head with "Bankrupt" above it. Just a nice big smile hopefully, and the chance to move forward & get on with the rest of your life.

    All the best :-)

  • charlie i can second what all the peeps have told you.i was a nonbeliever as to how the court proceedings would be,easier than i thought but then you expect the worse anyway.such a relief when i came out of court, all staff helpful.as for friends an family you would only be telling the ones you know you can trust anyway, any others as been said that dont dupport you are not worth it.you will sleep easier an that to me has been the best bit of unexpected pleasure.so look forward charlie you soon will have THATsmile on your face we all have once over. regards penny x
  • I was really nervous before i went BR and to be honest felt a bit lost, but i came on here, asked loads of questions and got brilliant answers and some wonderful advice.

The best thing is to relax, you have to remember that although you are going to court you are NOT a criminal and are still a good person who has hit some problems.

I am sure that no one who has gone bancrupt genuinely saw it as their life plan, i definately didnt! But, there are more of us than you think, and i would say dont tell anyone that you dont want to.

My employer just said, ok, fine, what can we do to help, friends just wanted to support me and family the same.

The OR call was very scary and i did get emotional - but they were not horrible or mean and were totally understanding and when i didnt understand i just said, im really sorry can you explain that again!

Dont persecute yourself and read as much as you can on here, there really are some wonderful folk who have so much knowledge (and personal experience)

Oh, and the sense of relief that was felt after i finished speaking to the OR was overwhelming!
