You should be more tolerant
Tolerant of what?
Do you mean gluten?
If so have you even the slightest idea what would happen to a properly diagnosed coeliac who did not eat entirely gluten free?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I've got Coeliacs Disease, but also have a serious cake addiction
The best recipes I've found for home baking were on the doves farm website - they have tons of really good recipes for biscuits, pastry etc, and really easy too!! I found that when I first started buying the baking stuff, it was pretty expensive, but now I have it all, I'm spending less then when I was eating normally.
Also, if you can find it, Women's Own (the magazine) brought out a cook book specialising in gluten free meals - I got given it as a gift, but I think it was ordered form one of the big booksellers.
I get pasta and bread mix (for making pizza) on prescription, but I wouldn't bother buying a lot of the gluten free stuff - I much prefer my homemade stuff to the shop baking.....

Seriously I'd check out the Vickery book tho- the food looked yummy on tv..
Soolin try emailing Boots about this. They do have a kinda responsibility for want of a better word as chemists to provide medical aids...What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

Perhaps you should be more specific in your reply? Or, if do you mean one of the above, perhaps a bit more understanding?0 -
My 6yr old daughter was diagnosed with coeliacs 3 weeks ago and I'm really finding it hard in the supermarkets. We get some stuff on prescriptions but now the school have asked for some of that for towards her school dinners...... then they ask me to pay full price for the dinners too!!!
I agree with the approved food references.... they had a lovely chocolate cake mix. I've just ordered the phil vickery book and now gonna search for the other book mentioned.
I cook a lot of our meals from scratch anyway which has helped but its the treats and gravy mixes that are so expensive... then I feel guilty because I cannot jusify paying £2 for a pack of scotch pancakes!!
My other 2 kids are starting the blood tests to see if the are coeliacs too. At least we know me and OH are clear.... well except for me having crohns and an ileostomy!!Sealed Pot Challenge - No 1520Want to be debt clear by June 2012:j0 -
Its is because it has become a trend to be 'intolerant ' to something ,be it dairy or wheat ,so the manufacturers are having a field day .atleast the real sufferers can get the products on prescription so it eases the burden a bit but if people stopped treating it as the latest foodie fad then the prices would come down a lot .0

Have to agree about the choc cake mix....i bought 3 cases of it (18 boxes), its quite versatile, hubbies fave ius if i substitute the water in the recipe for orange juice and put some orange zest in too...apparently its just like eating a chocolate orange(i can't try them as i'm intolerant to egg).
It does get easier tho...my hubby was diagnosed 2 years ago and its been a complete learning curve for us, but you do find after awhile that adapting meals gets easier.
Also for speciality flours...try a chinese supermarket, their rice flour, potato flour, tapioca flour etc are alot cheaper (and in bigger packs) than supermarkets.
I think that is awful that the school are demanding some of your daughters prescription food like that, is there no option for packed lunches instead?
Also if you join coeliac uk they will send you a food directory which tells you what food you can have from all the supermarkets and different brands too0 -
She has had packed lunches for 2weeks but feels left out from her friends. To be honest I feelso sorry for her I cannot say no to her wanting to have school dinners.
I will have to try the orange in the cake mix, thanks for that idea.Sealed Pot Challenge - No 1520Want to be debt clear by June 2012:j0 -
Hey Folks, I offer my sympathy. I am wheat intolerant too, but dont get the stuff on rx, I look into the ethnic foods available - rice noodles from the oriental aisle are much better value, and yes, I read every packet that goes into my trolley. some of the thai stuff is quite good, and when the offers are on, yipee! I cant stand the corn pasta stuff at all, which is what most of the yellow branded stuff is, but rice is much easier to prepare, and far easier on my pocket.
Happy shopping!Loving the sunny days!0
