Is CPP (Argos card)....

the same as PPI or is this another type of protection?

My Mother (pensioner) knew she had paid off the balance on her Argos account, but now has showed me a statement showing £29 CPP subscription, £1.61 interest and £12 late payment fee.
She didn't agree to any type of insurance and is now in a tizzy over this and I said I would try to help her. I hoped some of you good moneysavers may point me in the right direction as I haven't a clue where to start :(

Hi firstly if you have any complaint against them for this the correct address is here

. What to do if you have a complaint about how your policy was sold to you:
Please contact: Argos MasterCard Customer Services, PO Box 6239,
    Basildon SS14 9WX.
If you cannot settle your complaint with Argos MasterCard, you may be
entitled to refer it to the Financial Ombudsman

ALso as it reads CPP is Card protection plan and its a form of insurance if your cards are missing or stolen. They then cancel and cover your cards if they are fraudulently misused. If you did not want this cover and it was sold to you without your knowledge then I would say you could still make a complaint about it.

All the info about the card protection plan is here

  • CPP is worse them payment protection, because once your balance is paied off the payment insurance won't be taken, as it is taken as a percentage of the ballance.
This CPP get's taken from a card which you may be ignoring because you have cleared the ballance. Then you open a letter from them only to find CPP payment has been taken plus there are several charges for non payment. There could easily be £100 on a card you thought you'd finished with.
  • Card Protection is a product that protects all your cards – it’s not just linked to one. This means if you loose your purse and you need to cancel your cards you just need to make one call to cancel and reorder them. It also will provide emergency cash advance if you’re aboard and your purse is stolen. Although fraudulent transactions are covered by existing banking regulations, there are instances when banks refuse to cover losses and Card Protection will cover these transactions. Moreover it will pay for a locksmith if you lose your keys and need them replacing

CPP is a provider of this assistance.

Phoning them all probably costs lot less than £29 - especially if you ask them to call you back.

The one time it happened to my wife we were in France. I called my travel insurer's emergency number, they called me back I explained the situation and the were happy to get all the cards cancelled for her.

Some card providers/travel insurers will do that too. My wife lost her cards on our honeymoon, before we had set up any joint accounts and so mine got "hit" for all the expenditure until we got home. We decided separate accounts enabled us to disperse the risk!

and presumably take the bank to the Financial Ombudsman Service on your behalf using a procedure known as subrogation.

    That depends on the policy.
