Please please please can someone tell me if I have any comeback with RBS, they have charged me £700 in month for unpaid debit card transactions, this was due to the fact that I switched which acc I was having my wages paid into to my partners acc as I was going on maternity leave and he would be dealing with all the finances from then on.
There were only two payments, one for £3.50 and one for £250 which was attempted around 20 times and eventually I had RBS fraud squad on phone to me, I advised them I had contacted the retailer and was sorting it out with them and so they agreed to freeze my account until I had sorted it, upon recieving my statement at the end of the month I realised that not only had they continued to allow the retialer to attempt the payment but thay had also gien them £200 out my account which was not there to take!
All this resulted in £700 of charges in just 30 days!!!
Surely this MUST be illegal?!
When I called RBS they basically said tough s**t its your fault for not having the money in your account

Was the £3.50 payments fully cleared through your account(they can't charges if it wasn't?
Was the £250.00 transaction legitimate?
Furthermore, why did you tell the fraud team you were sorting this out if clearly some of the payments were not legitimate?0 -
The transaction for £3.50 was a train ticket bought from a conductor on the train, the POS machine they use obv does not take the payment straight away as I thought I had enough money in my account to cover this and turns out i did not.
The £250 transaction was for cheque centre debit card cash advance (I stupidly used their services when I had gotten myself into a bit of a pickle). The fraud team only advised me to call the police if the cheque centre had no reason to be debiting my account.
Technically the transaction was legitimate but after I had spoken to the cheque centre I had no idea that they would continue attempts to collect the money as a debit card payment. Maybe this was all just total naiveity on my part but I expected some sort of gesture of goodwill from RBS0 -

What I mean is that did you have a £250.00 guarantee card?
Were there multiple cheques?
Hang on, if a debit card payment is refused then there is no charge since it is simply declined. I having a tough time getting my head around this one to be honest.0 -
Hey natwest, I'm sorry if I'm confusing you just find it a bit difficult to understand myself lol! My deb card was guaranteed for £100 n i think the £3.50 was charged for because the POS machine doesnt actually dial in to confirm that there are sufficient funds in your account at the time of the transaction.
Sorry if that confuses you more:rotfl:0 -
Am trying to work out why there are so many charges. Was the cheque itself bounced twice or more times?Hey natwest, I'm sorry if I'm confusing you just find it a bit difficult to understand myself lol! Will work on the cheque transaction issue first then we'll look at the other payment, ok?0 -
Thanks for your patience natwest, the cheque centre transaction was actually a debit card payment, basically u give them ur deb card details, they give u sum cash and on the agreed date they process the payment to re-coup their money (plus a stupidly large fee) I'm so angry with myself for actually thinking it could be as simple as that, I should've known with my luck I would be in for a shafting. Totally admit its my fault for not having sufficient funds in my account on the agreed date... but it seems like an enormous amount of charges to be applied for basically saying NO to a transaction0

That isn't how it works. If it is a debit card transaction you aren't charged for a declined payment. Can I ask what the charges were down as being cos something isn't right at the moment? Thanks for your patience natwest, the cheque centre transaction was actually a debit card payment, basically u give them ur deb card details, they give u sum cash and on the agreed date they process the payment to re-coup their money (plus a stupidly large fee) I'm so angry with myself for actually thinking it could be as simple as that, I should've known with my luck I would be in for a shafting. EDIT: and stop beating up yourself cos we are gonna reclaim the lot once we work out how it happened

Just my luck, I seem to have lost the page of my statement with the majority of charges on it, cannot access my online banking as they have frozen this, from what I can piece together from the pages I do have I was being charged £35 a time for "GTEE CARD PYMT FEE" for both of the transactions, what puzzles me now that I look at it is if my card is only guaranteed for £100 how can they charge me for transactions over that amount, surely you cant apply a charge for a transaction that was never guaranteed to begin with???0

The Guaranted Card Payment Fee is because the items were paid not returned so we are moving forward. It might be worth popping into a branch of NatWest just to get those charges so we can see how they occurred/0
