    Hiya,

I'm trying to build up a collection of books about OS topics so will read the replies to this thread with interest!

Some of the books I have include:
    - the hovel in the hills books by Elizabeth West
    - the WI book of housekeeping
    - the dairy diary housekeeping book
    - reader's digest needlework and sewing books
    - the tightwad gazette by Amy Dackzyn (I think that might be spelt incorrectly!)
    - lots of books on sewing, knitting and crochet
    - lots of cookery books, especially older ones that are specifically aimed at basic cookery skills or cooking on a budget
    - how to be a kitchen gardener by Alan Titchmarsh
    - most of John Harrison's books about growing veg, low cost living and preserves
    - the wonderful weekend book by elspbeth .......can't remember her surname but this book is simply lovely :)

Basically I try to pick up reference books about the things I want to learn about. All my books have been picked up at charity shops or cost 1p from amazon. I have found amazon very useful as you can also see what other books people who bought that book also bought! I've found some wonderful books that way :)

    Hope this helps,

I love the Elizabeth West books, too.

At the moment I have two favourite cookbooks that are both old-style - The Pauper's Cookbook by Jocasta Innes and the More with Less Cookbook which is a compilation of recipes from Mennonites in the USA. Both are fantastic and the food from every recipe I've tried in each of them has been delicious. I highly recommend them both and they can be had cheaply on Amazon.

Oh, and an old favourite is Possum Living which you can read for free here: http://web.archive.org/web/20070630220508/http://www.f4.ca/text/possumliving.htm

It's Dacyczyn. I can see it on my shelf from where I am sitting. :)

Books concerning supermarkets and food suppliers might be :

    Shopped - Joanne Blythman
    Trolley Wars - Judy Bevan
Not on the label - Felicity Lawrence
Fast food nation - Eric Schlosser
    The Grocers - Andrew Seth.
