my cookery BIBLE is Good Housekeeping from the late seventies. I had mine as a wedding present and its still in use today! its my 'go to' book for basic recipes and right now 'retro' recipes! even though I had cookery lessons in school and Miss James' lessons stuck, I credit that book as teaching me how to cook from scratch and to learn how to adapt recipes.
I have seen later editions in charity shops - but am holding out hopes that I will come across the same edition as mine only in much better condition!

I'd recommend this book for cooking. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooking-Commonsense-Guide-Murdoch-Books/dp/0864115024

I have many modern/specialist books but always return to this one.

When my brother became a single man I bought it for him as it covers all the basics and includes some very tasty every day meals.

Visit your LIBRARY :j (they need your support nowadays!!)

Seriously, I don't know if it's just a Bournemouth/Dorset thing, but all our local libraries currently have a "green" section, and as well as the usual "how to install a composting lavatory under your wind turbine while weaving new clothes out of fairtrade bananas grown in your eco-greenhouse which you've made entirely out of plastic bottles"-type books, there are LOADS which are about self-sufficiency and reduction in costs as well as carbon footprint. Lots of make do and mend, herbal remedies, gardening, budget cookery, foraging - you name it, they've got it.

‘Merite un detour’ , as the old Michelin guide used to say.:T

I also love my Good Housekeeping book. My mum bought it for me and I use it constantly.

I recently bought "Economy Gastronomy" which is really good too!

You can't beat Delia Smith's Complete Cookery Course. I've got the paperback version which I've had for ages (from when it first came out as a paperback I think). My sister has the hard backed book which you got when she got married in the early 70s as a wedding present. It's got everything from the most basic to much more elaborate cooking.

For very simple everyday recipes you can't beat the Be-Ro cookery book, you can get details from Be-Ro site (click on About Us). Costs only £1.50 including post and packing. I'm on my 3rd copy of the book

I want to read OS type books.
I found Martins book inspired by the OS forum on my kindle last night. I've not bought it yet though!
I am interested in anything moneysaving/old style.
Also there were books about the supermarkets, truths about them. But couldn't remember the title/author so couldn't search.
What books help you/have you read.
    Many thanks
    Lisa
