Mis-sold a gym membership contract

Help!
I joined Virgin Active gym back in 2004, and at the time I was told there were 2 options, 12 month contract or rolling 30days monthly. I joined the 12mth option as it was cheaper. Now 5 years later I have tried to cancel my membership by giving 30 days notice, and have been advised that I signed up to a 12 month ROLLING contract, which means unless I give 30 days notice on the month previous to the month I originally joined (keeping up?
) then they will automatically resign me up for another 12 months! So in short, unless I remembered to cancel the contract in February of any given year, they will tie me in again until the following year. Has anyone heard of such an unethical contract? Most contracts go onto a rolling 30 days after minimum contract term has been met! Anyone have any advice to help me get out of this? Worth noting that in the small print I have signed it says (amongst a trillion other points) about it being 12 months rolling but doesn't explain what this means- and the sales person did not verbally advise me or make me aware at any point this was the case! Legally I may be over a barrel but ethically this can't be right surely?
