MBNA Trafford Centre gift card

Options
Hi

Im not sure if this is in the right place but here goes.

I was given an MBNA trafford centre gift card with a visa logo in Feb 08 with a total of £80 on it. I have kept the card safe till I had reason to spend the money. I tried to use the card last night but was avised the card was out of date.

There is an expiry date on the card which reads 04/09, I went to customer services who advised as the card had expired I was not entitled to the money. Surely this cant be right can it? Who is getting any unspent money and does anyone know if there is a way to reclaim it?

Help please?

Sorry if its in the wrong section

    Welcome to MSE!

As the expiry date is printed on the card, you haven't a leg to stand on, I'm afraid.

If you were given the card in February 2008, you had 14 months in which to redeem the offer. Why didn't you?

In the current economic climate, the scheme could easily have folded in that length of time.

  • I changed jobs in the february to the constructin trade and my job was never going to be safe, i didnt want to spend the money needlessly. Its only because my dad turns 60 this weekend that I was going to use it.

Ive had numerous gift cards before which didnt expire so I never thought to check it.

im annoyed that they should be allowed to put expiry dates on the cards.

    Lucky you.
Unfortunately, you've come unstuck with this one.

  • Does the person who bought the card have any rights to a refund though?

I had a voucher way out of date with Claire's Accessories, and others with Tesco's vouchers, for which I got an extension/refund. I would say if you keep writing you may have a chance, as it is pretty bad form.

You could argue that its like a credit card that expires with a credit balance. Its not their money, its yours.

You could argue under the sale of goods act that the item is not fit for the purpose for which it was sold

You could argue that although they may legal, it is unfair, you will never shop in the centre again, and will write to the local papers, and ask for noone to ever use scheme again

All the arguements may be bo11ox, but sooner or later someone must give in, and will only cost you at most a quid in stamps
I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
Drinking milk shakes, cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine
