Tried to order SKY HD last night and was told they had no dates for installation for Northern Ireland but would ring back tonight--They did--and the earliest installation date would be --MID JULY--and I would have to pay £299 tonight for it to be installed in 2 months time--you can guess what my response was---what do you think--anyone else experienced similar problems?

I rang at the weekend and they said 20th June at the earliest. The local euronics at Portstewart are trying to get it installed earlier for me but they say Sky just havent got the boxes. Hope to hear better news tomorrow

I really can't see the point in SKY HD? Can anyone else??

    I heard you had to

    1. buy a HD ready T.V.
    2. buy an additional box from SKY enabling you to view HD channels
    3. also pay an additional amount per month (£10 I think?)

Plus at the moment there are only half a dozen channels avaliable!

Would love HD but the £10/month extra is the deal breaker for me.

Aparrently, and I have not checked it out yet, but the BBC will transmit some World cup matches in HD. As the BBC is free to air on sat, you should be able to source a (non Sky) digi box with HD capabilities from somewhere like Germany and not pay Sky £10 a month for the priviledge.

Indeed you can, however you have to balance up the fact that you will only be able to receive the BBC's service with it (and a couple of European HD channels).

You're likely to pay around £300 for it, which is the same price as Sky's box. There is at least one FTA box which isn't handling the standard that has been adopted. Yes, you'll have to pay Sky an extra £10 a month for it, but that will give you a number of other channels in HD. Presumably you're only tied to the £10 for 1 year.

The BBC HD Channel will offer all the World Cup matches that it has the rights to in HD. ITV do not have an HD channel and therefore any match which is on ITV will not be available in HD. All BBC coverage of Centre Court and Court Number 1 at Wimbledon will be HD, outside courts will not be. Other material like Planet Earth and Bleak House will be on high rotation.

Remember before you part with your money that you will need a compatible television and that in tests, the average viewer couldn't tell the difference between an HD picture and a standard definition DVD.

yeah but a near blind person could tell the difference between standard tv and HDtv.

Hopefully it will come down in price at the start of next year!

I think SKY are banking on the fact of the World Cup and trying to sell HD on the strength of people being able to watch it in high def

I will wait for a while as the price is bound to drop as at the minute the box is £300 plus £10 per month subscription charge and if they don't get loads of people getting it then surely they would drop the price and at the minute there is only around 10 HD channels so is it really worth it at the minute
