DOB - Car insurance quote

Can anyone explain why I am asked my Date Of Birth when getting an insurance quote ? surely just my age would do, after all the policy will run for a year so I will have a birthday during the life of the policy. I think the quotation is based on my star sign  .

Because it both identifies your precise age and, in the National Car Insce database helps make you a bit more unique if your name is shared by several others?

As Mike says, it is mainly for identification purposes both in terms of data protection act identification when you contact your insurers, helps insurers track you down in their IT system to find all the quotes/ policies you have had with them, helps them validate what you have told them with external databases (such as insurance and counter fraud).

To a lesser extent a young drivers compulsary excess is based on their age at the time of the accident and not the date of inception and so the DoB will give the actual age of the driver at the time rather than an estimation for the purposes of calculating their excess.
