Can anyone tell me if I am legally entitled to get two car keys with a 2nd hand car?
I bought a car a few days ago and the sales man couldn't find the 2nd keycard at the time. He promised to have it for me yesterday but when I phoned to check he said that the they had bought the car with only one key and if I wanted a 2nd key I would have to buy it myself. I wasn't happy with this and spoke to the manager who said 'we might be able to come to an arrangement with you to share the cost'. The key card will cost approx £80-£100 to replace (it's for a Ren Laguna). I will get a 2nd keycard even if I have to buy it myself but I would like to know if I have any rights to make the dealer supply it for me.
I've had a look at several consumer rights sites but can't find any definitive answers so any advice appreciated.

not legally entitled no, however, dont buy it with just the one, you will be shafted if you loose it. Half the cost isnt too bad. maybe say you are going to walk away, for 40/50 quid im sure they will fund it0 -

The OP said he bought it, so he may have already paid and collected the car.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
If it was advertised for sale with 2 keys, then 2 keys you're entitled to.
If not, its tough really.0 -
Your not legally entitled to a 2nd key by default.
However it is reasonable to expect one and particularly if the salesman promised it I'd argue that it was agreed/implied as part of the deal therefore a contractual requirement.
This is a classic argument in a dealer and something that will have happened a million times before. Take it up with the general manager and if he doesn't budge go with 50/50 for an easy life.0 -
If it was me, I'd be asking what's happened to the other one? Is the seller going to come up and drive off in the car some day? Call me cynical, but....Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Having paid for it, your bargaining power is a lot less. Though as you were "promised" the key it was truly part of the deal which they should honour.
Next time, keep a retainer to cover the cost of the missing item till its handed over!0 -

I think I must be as cynical as you because that's exactly what went through my head.0 -
I know with BMW keys the dealer can de-activate them so the previous owner of the car can't come and drive it away.0
