Xbox 360 and The Red Ring Of Death!

Hi all,

Just had my Xbox 360 die on me for the third time in 4 years, the dreaded Three Red Light error. The only problem now is that because my warranty has expired (including the three year one Microsoft put in place after it realised what was happening), so i can no longer send it back to them to get fixed for free and will cost the sum of £100+.

I think this is a joke! I was wondering if anyone had any advice. Personally I would like to sue the !!!! off Microsoft as I bought a product from them expecting it to work properly and last. Not to keep getting it repaired!! They must be breaking some kind of law?

Anyone?

Wish Martin could do a piece on this on TV!

Jack

  • How long ago was it that the original console was purchased, nearly four years ago?

yeah, i got it not long after release. I know it was some time ago but a product shouldnt continue to fail after buying it. Mircrosoft have a lot to answer for.....
  • I don't think you have any options other than to:

    A) Pay Microsoft to repair the console
    B) Buy a replacement.
    C) Argue with the retailer

Option C relies on what the Sale of Goods Act gives you the consumer protection in that an item should last for a reasonable amount of time, however that is very loose and open to interpretation.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't consider four years to be an unreasonable length of time for a modern games console to last for, which is the crux of what you would be relying on should you decide to pursue that avenue which would more than likely end up having to go through the Small Claims Court.

I think your best bet would be to get to Gamestation and buy a second hand console since they will offer you a warranty on your purchase.
  • I've just had the three red rings but luckily my 360 is under the three year warranty so I'm in process of sending it back to microsoft.

You can get it repaired for a lot less than £100+ (admittedly not through microsoft) I looked online and saw companies doing it for aorund £40 (not sure if I'm allowed to post link)

This is the first time I've bought a console that hasn't been a nintendo, as soon as my xbox 360 gets back from microsoft I'm selling it and getting a wii....

how long is it since it was last repaired? i ask because i am sure i have seen it said on this forum that a repair is guaranteed for 12 months.
  • My lad is now on his 3rd XBox, now a reconditioned unit. Looks like the PS3 is just as unreliable according to Watchdog tonight.

i've recorded watchdog. my 360 needed repairing a few months ago. i bought a ps3 this year i hope it doesnt go the same way. although it is a 80gb version. even so the 80gb version is newer. so there is the fear it could happen to any version.
  • Have you checked the serial number on the back of the console. I got 3 red rings a few months back (2 days before the 3 years was up!, luck!) and when I got the new one im sure it said it is covered by another 3 years for the red ring from the new date. find the date on your latest console and check it online. I know not everyone will agree but i thought that was right...

that might be the case. i just thought i read 12 months. i know that when a ps3 breaks down and gets replaced the new console is only guaranteed for 3 months.
