Panasonic DVD recorder. Disc compatability problem.

I have the panasonic dvd recorder model No: DMR-ES20DEB.
I have been using a Sony DVD-RW with no problems.
I bought a spindle of Maxell DVD-RW the only ones the shop had. The DVD Recorder says they are uncompatable. A costly mistake as once opened they cannot be returned.
Does anyone know why this is and is there a way I can tell before buying dvd-rw?
Does anyone have the same recorder and can recommend a brand cheaper than Sony.
