Decent paying 2nd jobs?

Are there any decent 2nd jobs about?

How much do you get taxed on a 2nd job? Say you worked 10 hours a week at a 2nd job and got paid £5.50 an hour then how much would you take home after tax assuming you did 40 hours a month?

How much do places like Aldi and Lidl pay an hour? Heard it was quite a bit more than the other supermarkets.

There are already people that do various catalogue things in my area as we are always getting them through the door and I don't have any transport anyway.

I'm just thinking out loud really, there are always lots of helpful responses given on this board.

You get taxed the same rate in your second job as you do in your main job. Eg I will get charged 25%
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

I'd love a 1st job that paid me that, never mind 2nd!

I always thought that you got taxed quite a bit more in a 2nd job which was why I never thought it was worth it, and I would be better off doing overtime in my usual job.

As you've used up all your allowances from your main job, you will pay tax at the normal rate which I believe is 22% & NI Which I think is 7%. So basically you should take home 71p for every pound you earn.

You don't get any allowances in your 2nd job (you can earn around £5k a year without paying tax, but this is 'soaked up' by your first job). Should work out around the same as overtime if the hourly rate is the same.
  • My 2nd job pays me £5.50 an hour but my boss pays my tax for me so I do actually take home £5.50 an hour.

My 2nd job at healthclub was £6.73 and my 2nd job now is around £9 per hour (estate agents).. There are some good paying 2nd jobs out there. How about working somewhere where you could get tips? Bar/waitressing?

It is depressing knowing that after tax you take home even less but its better to be earning money than not being able to spend any!! xx

Bar jobs are a good bet - not the best payers, but can be a good way of socialising without splashing the cash. Plus, you're likely to have drinks bought for you! In my local the staff keep a tally of what's been "bought" and then use them up on their night off!

    Check here:

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/it.htm

....for your basic tax allowances and the rates of tax payable after that.

As has already been said your first job will almost certainly use up all the allowances, but unless both jobs (and any other income) together give you more than £33,300 for the current tax year (2006/07) then you will be taxed at 22% on the second job. You do need to add National Insurance onto that as well.

I don't think you will have to pay national insurance if you only earn £55 a week in your second job, but you will pay 22% tax (assuming you are not a higher rate tax payer!). As far as I know, you could have 5 jobs and if you earnt less than the minimum threshold for NI in all of them, then you would pay no NI at all.
