changing an advance rail ticket

Hi - hope you regular train travellers can help...
I have an advance single for tomorrow which ideally i'd like to change to a later time.
Going through the trainline - where I originally bought it - I would have to write in for a refund and get my fare back less the £10 admin. Then rebook the new train time which is same price as before but have to pay the £1 booking fee and £3.50 credit card fee - so the change would cost me £14.50.
Can I change the ticket at the station in the morning - which I'm guessing would only cost the £10 admin fee and I would save the other fees charged by the trainline and the hassle of having to write in for refund?

thanks

If it's really an advance single then yes, provided you do it before the original train departs you can change it at the station. It will cost you the £10 admin fee PLUS the difference in fare to a walkon ticket - it definitely won't be the same fare.

If it's an anytime/offpeak/superoffpeak single that you just happen to have bought in advance then you don't need to do anything. Subject to any peak hour restrictions, it's valid on any train.

What does it say on it?

And for future reference - save yourself £4.50 a go by not using the trainline - any train company site will sell you the same tickets at the same price with no fees.
  • Thanks - its a ticket that was bought by my work so any extra charges I would need to cover since I want a later train so I can hook up with a friend.

Its an advance single for tomorrow - so what i might do is pop in tonight on way home and see if its changeable!

Thanks for the tip about other sites - I'll let the guys at work know that book train tickets - they're not exactly moneysaving when it comes to expenses - idiots!
