Transaction time limit

Hi there,

I recently had the RAC fix my car at work, after which I had to pay for some parts that were fitted, I paid with a credit card which he took a print of to be processed back at the headquarters, he mentiond they can take a little time to go through but this has now been three weeks, I am due to balance transfer soon and close the card I paid with but can't until they take the payment. Does anybody have any information on how long maximum these transactions are allowed to take?

Thanks,

Matt.

Just give them a polite call. Explain the situation, tell them they have a week to fix it. If they don't fix it, just close the card anyway and do the balance transfer. No doubt they'll chase you for the payment. You also get the satisfaction of saying "I told you so".

Do it in writing and state that if a problem arises you will make payment on the new card. Keep a copy.

  • thanks guys, I was kind of hoping after a month it would become invalid with 'hoping' being the operative word, not to worry I'll just give them a call to check there are no penalties likely to be incurred and then cancel the card.

As long as you tell them, there will be no penalties. But don't call them, write.

  • I just had a similar issue. I was getting 2.5 tonnes of wood cladding for my house, which came to quite a hefty sum of money, and I paid for it three weeks ago. Or so I thought. I checked my bank balance a week later and it was all still there! They didn't actually take the money out until yesterday when it was delivered. Aparently it's standard practice as I today i had to order a bit more and I mentioned it but it did put me into a bit of a moral dilemma. Do you remind them about the charge or hope they forget and spend it on something else but risk them finding out their mistake further down the line and then not having any money left to pay for it? I had decided to keep quiet until after I recieved the wood and then try to decide what to do but thankfully the whole thing was taken out of my hands!
