Renting & home insurance

I'm moving into a new property tomorrow after sorting out all the particulars but the one thing still remaining is home insurance. I understand the landlord has to provide building cover hence I just need contents cover but how long will the insurance take to be processed?

I'm a bit weary of having an uninsured house for the first week or two whilst the insurance people sort out all the details. I've looked at quotes and saved them for later access but didn't want to dedicate myself to buying one until we were firmly in the property and I could ensure I got all of the detailing right (as they ask so many questions about locks/windows/alarms etc.)

Thank you for the any advice!

The insurance can start immediately that payment has gone through, so pay on a credit card & within ~10 minutes!! If you don't know the answer to a question, be honest & say "I don't know"
  • If you are going to take out Legal Cover too with your contents insurance, make sure you use an insurer that covers your legal bills if you have to take the landlord to court, or defend yourself in court against the landlord.

The contents insurance I looked at last year with Lloyds TSB, excluded legal cover against landlords. The Saga contents insurance (with added legal cover for an extra £18) I have this year, states that it covers legal action against landlords. It was cheaper than LLoyds TSB quote too.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
