    Morning all!

Still haven't caught up on the thread:o Skimmed over and I can see erm....a lively discussion a few days ago. Glad I missed that!:rotfl:

    Welcome Mr Fox!!!!

Budgie - sorry about the football score (I don't watch footie so had to look up on the BBC to see what it was!) Glad to hear you are feeling positive and happy though. Thanks for the kind words - amazingly I didn't flip out when the washing machine died. Am determined to take things in my stride more this year! And Piglet was lovely whilst I was poorly...kept covering me up with a blanket and bringing me drinks (orange juice unfortunately - not a good thing with a bad tummy! Had to keep pretending drunk them :rotfl:)

Fay - ((hugs)). Pick yourself up and carry on. The HALT thing is very true isn't it?

HB - 20 for me please. Hope you are feeling a little bit better today?

Maman - Haven't leapt on the scales yet (weighday Saturday) so not sure yet if tummy bug has helped the Piggy fatloss.....but it bluddy well better have!!!:rotfl:

Not sure what to do with myself and Piglet this morning. Did lots of cooking and cleaning yesterdat so not much to do today! Perhaps we'll go and feed ducks. If its not raining (beginning to get the urge to emigrate - its either snowing or raining here:mad:)

    Miss P
    xx

    Hi All,

I am on day 2 AF at the moment.... Nervously awaiting the evening of the 3rd to see what it may bring!

I have been looking for a forum to chat with like minded people who want to either stop drinking completely or just to give their bodies a rest for a while so hopefully I have come to the right place,

To be honest I have been on the sauce now for the best part of 15 years, mainly socialising with friends (my whole social life seems to revolve around booze: A nice meal & wine with friends, the cinema followed by a drink somewhere, drinks after work etc etc). Anyway I have recently started drinking at home more and more; first started with just a glass of red or G&T, then 2, then a bottle, then a couple of cans and a bottle. On Monday morning woke up with the mother of all hangovers and decided that enough really was enough..... Got home Monday night after work and just collapsed I was so tired and it finally hit home that I need to do something before it really starts getting out of control.

I have put on weight over the past year and just feel (and look) bloated, so hopefully this will help loose some weight and get me feeling better in myself (I really do feel rock bottom).

Gave up cigarettes on the 22nd Dec so I know that I do have will power and just hope that I will stick to both! But I am pretty scared by it all really, after all booze has been my friend now for a long long time.

Your help & support will be gratefully received....

    Mr Fox

Welcome. Admitting that things are awry is the first step. Many people are in denial about their level of drinking and dependence on alcohol, but that doesn't seem to be you!!:T

For me, I stopped drinking in Aug 07, and smoking in Jan 09. I was not strong enough to do both at the same time.
Drinking can kill people in years, can make people be rude and selfish, and mask underlying mental conditions and anxieties. Smoking can kill you eventually, but does not have some of the horrible aspects of drunken behaviour (shame, guilt, embarrassment)

If you can stop both, then great. However, it is better to quit one than none. I needed a lot of help to stop drinking (and continue to receive help to prevent me drinking), but smoking I could do by myself. What works for one may not work for the other. Both alcohol and nicotine react in different ways with the body, and we have different relationships with them both.

Evening all! HB - my total is now 19 days. Mr Fox - welcome - if you can give up smoking, you can give up drinking - giving up smoking was the hardest thing I ever did but well worth it. Good luck to you - and to everyone else. Bye for now xx

Maybe, though it is different for different people.

Just popping in to say another AF day today so that's 5 now Honeybear please.

Felt very very tempted tonight but was going out to see comedian John Bishop. He was great. The theme was "living your dream" and he asked if any of us were. I don't think my dream was to be pouring wine down my neck every day!!

Well done to all those doing so well and tomorrow's another day if not!

    Sleep well

    DB :)

Quite - I doubt any of us would have thought 10 years ago that we would be on a thread for our problems with alcohol.

I know for me I never entertained the possibility of being alcoholic ( as I did not drink Tenants Super and sleep on park benches), but so much of my thinking and behaviour was alcoholic (not wanting to stop after I started drinking, fear and anxiety, etc)

At least now I can live each day without any of the negative consequences of drinking, and for me that's great.
  • Shaggy well done on meeting and beating your target

Hello to all - thanks for the good wishes of picking self up etc Budgie as always hunny how on earth do you keep up - whatca Jo! Hello to you all and hope everyone is OK.......

Read my book 'Living sober' always seem to open at a relevant chapter - last night it was about 'Easy does it' Chapter 18 - how true alot of those things are for me. All about finding a core of inner peace and patience and contentment.

Each day is a shiney new one - AF last night despite the battle with the supermarket - I even went in and stood around thinking come on - you're only here for one thing, cut to the chase and either buy some wine or get home.

I went home. Basket empty didn't indulge myself in getting other 'things' I needed as I knew exactly why I was inside a supermarket - and I have a well stocked house of food at home.

Funny how just one drinking day can set you back to the demon calling bells and looking like a deranged Jim Carey look a like in the supermarket arguing with yourself - sorry if I sound a bit down, I'm OK - honest. A day at a time is fine by me - yesterday was AF and I'll work on today...........................going to order a couple of those books RA mentioned - perfect daughter etc

Well done to the lady who is scoring - and well done to those finding thier own way along! Morning Miss P and Squizz well done on a week, be patient my little one, and you shall be rewarded!

    HB I'm on 16 AFDS, :)

PS did we decide on me scoring in Feb?

Blue is the colour, football is the game, we're all together, & winning is our aim....so cheer us on through the wind & rain cos Chelsea, Chelsea is our name.

Not sure where that came from...coffee must've been too strong this morning.

    Hi all....especially Fay,

I read the book 'The Woman who walked into Doors' by Roddy Doyle that you recommended.

Am now reading the follow up....it's called 'Paula Spencer'

I read a line last night about how her daughter was feeling and I quote

'Alcoholics can stop drinking but what is there for the children of alcoholics.'

A bit deep I know but what she was saying is that her daughter will always be watching ....looking for the signs that her mum is drinking again.

Think of your kiddies folks when the bell rings.
    Take care of you

How true - stopping smoking was a doddle compared with this. I've given this quite a bit of thought cos I don't understand why; I think it's because if you smoke "seriously" it almost inevitably involves doing so every day as that's the nature of the drug nicotine. When I smoked I didn't drink every day (far from it) but since I stopped smoking my drinking has increased cos I need / want that daily "fix" of...something. I haven't drunk every single day since I stopped smoking, but it probably ain't far off!

It's all about substitution for me - Freud would no doubt have a field day!
