Windows XP requesting authorisation code?

I bought a refurbed fujitsu notebook over a year ago which had xp already installed, over the last few weeks it has been requesting an authorisation code for XP, i have stupidly been ignoring this request and now am unable to use the laptop without entering this code, i will have to make contact via telephone as i'm unable to access the internet without being able to log on.
My question is (before i call and make a fool of myself) will i need to re-install xp? i have no disc as it was already installed, there is a product licence key sticker on the laptop if that means anything
and also, why is this being requested after having worked fine for the last year?
TIA
