the songs need to be on the pc for itunes to see them to keep them on your ipod. as you have discovered if the songs are no longer there the next time you sync the ipod they are removed
  • is there away round this problem?

this program http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/ has been mentioned on another thread as a way of getting the music from the ipod onto the PC so it can be recognised in itunes

the other option is to get something like an external hard drive to keep all your music files on so you can keep them on the pc

myself - that's not the way it's designed. You're meant to have all you music ripped (transferred from CD) onto your computer. Then when you plug your iPod in, your entire music collection, along with ratings, play counts etc, is transferred from your iPod. This syncing of new music added, and old music removed automatically, is what makes the system so easy to use without hassle.
I'd suggest that if you have more space available on your iPod than your computer, you need to upgrade the hard drive in your computer. It's a really good idea to have your music on it, what if you lose your iPod, would you want to re-rip all your music?

In the iPod Window, select the option to manually manage music and videos.

Now, songs will only be added when you drag them to your iPod yourself, and the tracks on your computer won't affect the tracks on your iPod.
