Hi my son has moved to Holland to study, someone mentioned that you can call mobiles abroad for as little as 2p a min. How on earth could I do this? I am with the post office for my calls and my son has 2 phones - a PAYG vodafone sim (made use of the reduced roaming charges over the summer to call home and for me to call him) and a dutch contract phone (for calling his dutch girlfriend!)
Any advice much appreciated.

Holland always sticks out as expensive for calling from abroad for some reason.0

Although Auracall shows up on the MSE International CallChecker, I have no experience of their alleged 0p/minute service (their real price for calling a Netherlands mobile, via an 0911 gateway number, appears to be 15p/minute).
However, as you'll see, none of the others can offer a gateway number charged at less than 9p/minute to call a Netherland mobile.
As such, callng the UK mobile would be cheaper FOR YOU (but your son would have to pay to receive the call as well).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
When I had a look at Auracall last night it was saying 0.8p for calling landline to mobile.
Does your son have internet access by the way?
Have a look here if he does:

This article will explain how to call mobiles abroad as well.0 -
I really appreciate your advice and will indeed check out Auracall. Son just has the vodafone I gave him and I top it up from here - so I pay whatever way it works! He is a student and not getting any grant or loan. He washes dishes in the hotel to help survive and we pony up the rest. Therefore reducing costs would be really helpful.0

I can't guarantee calling Holland/Netherlands with Auracall is 0.8p for sure but if you have any doubts you could always try contacting them about this. I can't guarantee you'll get a reply though.0

Might be cheaper for him to get a cheap international phone card from a shop over there and ring you from a payphone?0

Surely he can find a Dutch landline you can call him on? There are numerous cheap ways to call Dutch landlines from a UK landline.

You must be able to find a carrier to get the cost to you down to 1p/minute or less to call a Dutch landline (from personal experience, I'd recommend 18185).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. There must be a public phone box near by that he [your son] could arrange to be at at a certain time. These days public phone boxes are not used very often so shouldn't be too much of a problem.0
