Car sold - logbook lost on way to DVLA? Advice please.

Hi all,

Around 3 months ago my Dad sold a car to a friend of his, my dad passed away 3 weeks ago and we have just received a tax reminder for the end of this month for the car he sold. I'm not 100% as to what happened with the logbook and obviously can't find out now, but his friend has the new keeper supplement and remembers signing the logbook so I can only assume it's gotten lost on the way to the DVLA as we haven't come across it.

I saw somewhere you can just write a letter to the DVLA saying who & when you sold it to so they transfer it over, can I do that in this case? As really don't want to have to pay for a new logbook and wait weeks to sort all this out. I also think I saw that the new owner can apply for a new logbook free of charge within a certain time - is that correct? To be honest I can't see how he didn't notice he hadn't received it but want to help without dragging this out. Will he have problems trying to tax it himself as the letter's in my Mum's name (car was registered to her), or will we need to do it for him?

If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it as this is a hassle we don't need right now...

  • I had this happen once, I just phoned the DVLA and explained Id sold the car 2months prior an never heard anything from them in relation to the car again.

We sold car a couple of weeks ago and was told yesterday that we need to pay #25 for a new issue of logbook because we couldnt find it to pass it on.

OP, the best thing the buyer could do would be to download a V62 form.

Complete this and send it off.

Dvla will send a V5C without charge if the 'new keepers slip' is sent too.
Read the bit "When there is no fee" on the form for details.

In the meantime, if the new keeper needs to tax the vehicle, its probably best to do that using the 'new keepers slip' before sending it to DVLA.
Again, this detailed on the V62 form.

    No.

In the normal course of events, the buyer does not have to send the slip off.
