What is this bowl called or for?

Not strictly a thrifty question, but there are some wise old birds on the forum. Can one of them tell me what kind of a bowl this is, or was once used for?

bit difficult as there is no dimensions given or says whether it is fixed to base! it could be a designer fruit bowl if fixed (as I cant think of anything else i would use it for!) its sort of Pudding bowl shaped but why would you have a base? or is it the lid? hmmmmmmmmmm - have to say - in all my (shhhh 55) years I havent seen anthing quite like it. my inclination is first suggestion! sorry if this wasnt much help......but am intrigued......and couldnt read and run!
can I just ask - why are you asking? have you bought one? if so, what are YOU using it for?0 -
Hard to tell with nothing to compare it with for size. Is that a base/stand or a lid or both?
Looks a bit like an ice cream sundae dish.

Many moons ago I think I had a stainless steel mixing bowl that looked like that but without the foot. If its not fixed to the foot I too wondered if that was a turntable similar to one used for icing cakes.Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw
apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.0 -

Sorry peeps to have given only half the information.
The bowl is fixed to the base. I thought they were called porringers, but today's research has shown me that this is not correct.
It is a mid sized bowl: bigger than an ice cream coupe but not as big as a serving bowl. It is 5.5 inches across, a bit bigger than a grapefruit or maybe the pointed end of a rugby ball.
And it is stainless steel.
Does that help?0 -
I have, like others seen an icing turntable like this, about 50 years ago, turned upside down, but you say that the base is fixed to the bowl so can't think of anything else...will wait with bated breath until someone comes up with an answer

How do you know the base is fixed and what size it is? You can't tell that from the picture, do you have other pics/info?
If you ask me it's a medical bowl, probably used to put your bits in after they've been cut out.
If not, and the base is fixed, it would indicate that the contents are valuable as someone has gone to a lot of trouble to ensure it won't tip over.0 -
